I lot of people blame immigrants/visotrs, thus the video from India scares a lot of people as locals see them as why crime is higher,
As for Taiwan, I do think more crime is reported. But also drug use seems higher than i thought (talk to youth, many have stories about what is going on not in the news)
From what I understand a lot of people are using drugs in Taiwan like truck drivers, manual laborers, seems it’s pretty common, especially drug driving at present.
Not even counting the prescription drug abuse.
As for whether ‘crime is going up’, I don’t see it in Taiwan at all. This place is becoming more and more sleepy. Cybercrime is/was big, but I doubt it’s still increasing now also.
I am not saying this is YOUR logic, but the logic of “thus” in the quotation above is extremely weak. We need to do better than this.

This is true. What is more, is youth with money. You see many with expensive cars, out late just wonder where the money comes from.
As for those videos in India (looks like mumbai metro), seems in other media posted not only in Japan show them as criminals are scare locals in Japan and other places.
Japan’s increasingly negative attitude is shaping Taiwanese opinion as well. That plus reports like these don’t help.

Statistically, this probably doesn’t happen more than the same stuff committed by locals, but since some parties are trying to make this a political issue, plus Japan’s changing attitude, every single news like this is going to be amplified many times over.
Japan will get over itself when it starts to go extinct and they have an oh shit moment we are fucked there’s nobody to wipe our asses or to clean our houses or build or repair anything. They can squeak and be racist as much as they want but they will have to accept it or else just sag into a poor degrading country. Already the countryside towns there are severely depopulating. Whose going to fix anything or run the farms ?
So will Taiwanese! I reckon there will be half the restaurants left in a couple of years unless they completely open it up to foreign workers. It’s already getting bad. Who is going to build anything or fix the roads in future ? The only thing keeping countryside towns going here are Vietnamese spouses but still won’t be enough.
Issue with such news is that If a westerner men do anything like this, the locals say “Its just one guy, most westerners are nice” but If an indian man do it, locals say “All indian men are like that”
BTW where is @PeiHua-Connie. He/She is the one who would be happy to write this news to tell everyone indian men are dangerous
Japan still has loads and loads of Chinese from Manchuria and Mongolians. Last time I went, they also have Indians staffing 7-11s. Taiwan… well yeah, it’s not gonna be good if people continue to be xenophobic.
Yeah… that’s the problem I guess. The constant stream of Mandarin news articles about gang rape in India has been going on for years. That probably add to the problem as well.
It seems that Chinese are currently the targets moreso than the Indians.
Of course some unscrupulous online posting—some of which we see here on this site—could try to redirect anger and frustrations toward South Asians too.

That’s pretty much the core of a racist’s mindset (and not limited to Taiwan): Judging people not solely on their actions or character but always in the context of their outward appearance and ethnic background.
A rapist will then either be seen as a poor soul who lost god’s path and made a drunken mistake or be used as an example that everyone sharing that same ethnicity and/or appearance is rotten to the core…
Just do be careful not to generalize Taiwanese people in a similar way: Just because the media seems to be pushing an unbalanced view in that regard doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire population will think exactly like that, too. Media often runs on sensationalism and polarization unfortunately…
This is a really good post. I’d add that it’s not just media encoding that requires scrutiny; it’s the decoding of that media that matters too (i.e. some critical thinking).

For me disappointment towards taiwanese is their lack of logical thinking. Most of them I talked to who have this racist opinions often are the ones who have traveled abroad and sometimes to a lot of countries and yet they can’t seem to understand how critical thinking works.
There is a saying in my country “you can take a bat out of a cave and put him in a castle and yet he will sleep upside down from the ceiling”
I had a similar impression of a Vietnamese friend I was in Vietnam with a couple of months ago, when she was complaining about all the Indians in Hanoi and the Taiwanese petition about Indians in Taiwan.
It’s like… you realize you’re also an immigrant in Taiwan, and one from a Southeast Asian country whose immigrants to Taiwan aren’t treated particularly well, right? You really want to take an anti-immigrant stance?
I sort of dropped it because I have extensive experience of how attempts at logical discussions tend to pan out with her, but I found it quite baffling.

I had a neutral view on Indians before, but then every shitty attitude shopkeeper I ran into on a Thailand trip was Indian.
I just observed the pattern. Wonder how many “xenophobic” Taiwanese noticed a pattern too.

I am in a major city in Canada right now, and I have also dealt with lots of Indian shopkeepers and front line staff. I have found them to be courteous and professional, and completely unlike the “pattern” described above.
