Not in Thailand but Malaysia, KL Chinatown seems to be mostly Indian vendors now. In fact most of the workers seem to be from the Indian subcontinent.
Yeah, are Indians disproportionally doing this? Or are global media disproportionally reporting cases involving Indians?
There was another such news reporting in Taiwan a couple of days ago.
When the perpetrator followed the victim home, he realized the victim is a cross dressing man with long hair. He thought about it, and then went through with it anyway.
It’s not difficult to understand, East Asians see themselves on a ladder or hierarchy, with Indians being pretty much at the bottom.
It’s interesting that in Japan, there is clearly respect for forms of Indian culture, cuisine, craftsmanship, and so on. You can see this in the way that shops like MUJI proudly use distinct forms of Indian cotton or metalware in their goods—something valued by people in Japan, along with the sophisticated cooking.
I’ll leave aside the fact that what is now India is the birthplace of Buddhism, a remarkable set of ontological and ethical principles that had a huge impact across East Asia.
I think many Japanese people get this. I am less certain that the dictatorship era educated Taiwanese (Han-centric education all the way through) who continue to consume blue leaning or sensational media understand any of this. Put otherwise, I think we are dealing with some of the aftereffects of blinkered forms of education and media here.
Yet: many Taiwanese are religious and / or vegetarian, and when they learn about how Indian kitchens handle vegetables and grains, they are often delighted (I am seeing this happen in real time). And with the economic integration of Taiwan and India, especially in Southern India, I am seeing more direct contact and I think more respect compared to the frankly racist things posted at times on this site.
One hopes there will be more mutual understanding going forward.

Most are real Taiwanese accounts, (I checked a couple, some will be fakes). It seems open season on racism against Indians . They hide behind using Chinese.

Seeing how many comments blamed it on the DPP, it matches my initial hunch that at first fear-mongering is being used by the Blue-white coalition as a political tool. I am just afraid Japan’s attitude will eventually make statements like this truly mainstream.
Yeah they’re writing things like, Taiwan women watch out all these rapists are coming. It’s pretty shocking.
It’s also the fact that no Taiwanese try and stand up to the hate speech. They just go along with it.
It’s baddddd..the worst part of it…almost nobody calls it out. Not for the first time it’s not great being able to read social media in Chinese . A lot of horrible comments and attitudes.
I’ve no doubt Chinese govt are behind some part of it to forment fear of foreigners, it serves their purpose to keep Taiwanese more distant from a competitor such as India. Most of it is probably just home grown racism though.
At this point, if anyone is going to do anything meaningful about curbing these types of hate speech, it would have to come from the top rung of either the KMT or the TPP.
Anyone else saying anything that urges people to stay levelheaded would just get labeled as a DPP supporter. I mean these Blue-White types can make hate speech like the DPP worse than the CCP go viral, and throw it around everywhere they go, in any situation, directing the hate to a minority group to further smear the DPP would be a piece of cake for them.
It’s hard for any of the party people to openly acknowledge it. Because if they do then they are also acknowledging the fact that their own country people are being openly racist which will not fit well for their image in the world of the “most friendly people in the world”
So the only way they can acknowledge it is by saying that all of the racist posts that we see on the internet are by Chinese propaganda people and they are not at all by taiwanese people
Which clearly is not true
There are racist people everywhere. I can’t speak for most Taiwanese people because I did spend a good amount of time outside of Taiwan, and am probably even more left leaning than most DPP supporters, but I’ve been acknowledging the fact that Taiwanese people are very convinced of racial stereotypes being true, and feel no need to censor themselves when expressing that type of view.

Yep, this anti Indian racism is really pretty new while general racism is not new.
You will find that Taiwanese will write a lot more inflammatory stuff in Chinese than English, they kinda hide behind that, a bit like how some people will use Taiwanese to utter profanities out loud about foreigners. Basically if you are going to be racist have the balls to do it to people’s faces right.
