Xiao Liuqiu Oil Spill

Just noticed this on international news. Haven’t noticed any local news.

Even hit the famous rock formation at Xiao Liuqiu

Oh no…

Chinese language news:

That sucks. Hope they are able to clean it up fully.

From the first link.

CNPC spokesperson Zhang Ruizong said that a crude oil leak was discovered at around 2 am today. At that time, three work boats patrolled the scene. However, due to the poor walrus, the preliminary inspection did not find oil slick. In the morning, according to the direction of the current, it was found that it was flowing to the Xiaoliuqiu waters. Immediately, five work boats and hundreds of people were dispatched to clean up the oil pollution.

WTF?

Fuckwads.

Don’t even want to think about how much damage might be done to the coral reefs and sea turtles there. :face_vomiting:

I mean, oil slicks are big news and all, but still it feels like someone is burying the lede here!

I am the walrus?

On Sunday (June 27), the Ocean Affairs Council (OAC) ordered CPC to take effective measures to put a halt to the oil leak and to remove all oil pollution. It has also levied a fine against the corporation of NT$1.5 million (US$53,766)

That will teach them a lesson! \s

They are the egg men.

Pretty baffling that it took so long to actually discover the leak. You would think flow sensors would pick it up instantly. Presumably no such thing is installed.

Absolutely!
This is whole 15x harder than it was on that Filipino guy who was fined for 8s quarantine breach.

Urg, didn’t realize this was this big. I dreamed the other night I was at a beach watching them do the cleanup.

I hope those guys doing the cleanup are wearing their masks and maintaining proper social distance. As we all know, beaches are exactly where COVID transmission is likely to happen. Stay safe!

Anybody know exactly how much oil has been spilled? It doesn’t look catastrophic, from the pictures.

CPC method of disinfection maybe?

300k fine for touching a turtle, five times more for smothering them and their habitat in 25M metric tonnes of crude oil.

That must be a wholesale price for a big customer.

Anyone else think Taiwan needs to rethink its fine structure? Like corporations should pay just a little bit more than they do for causing mass destruction than they charge people, especially foreign people, for doing what is, in comparison, negligible/virtually nothing?

Ah yes. But you’re not remembering the influence of bribes and corruption and face here.

This is where that works
