my system used to be stable, I use Winxp, but then installed winamp 5.0 and notice when I open a website that if the Media Library window opens to display the website of the radio station a la Club977.com style, there is another popup window that screws up my system. It takes the whole system down… anyone else noticed that. 3 times now!
I think the latest versions of Winamp have a few bugs. I used v3 for ages, and then a couple of months ago downloaded the latest one (5.02, my version says), and things just went up the spout / down the toilet from there. I open the program, and it takes a good couple of minutes for it to start up, and also does weird things with the media library.
It’s a decent program, though, nice bells and whistles (but missing some things that were useful - like ‘remove duplicated’ files from the playlist), and looks fairly good. I use Win 2000, though.
Edit - Just downloaded 5.03 - seems to be better. Started within seconds, and hasn’t tried to kill me yet, although it may be plotting…
Isn’t it just a ploy by Microsoft to maintain their vicelike grip with Windows Media Player? If they can allow non-Microsoft software to “crash” your computer, or perform more slowly, then Microsoft will be a natural choice.
To add some perspective, most of the applications that slow down and crash my PC (running WinXP) are those from Microsoft, with Outlook leading the pack.
