Morality police at it again. I’d expect this in the Middle East, not a supposed western-style democracy.

According to that report, the kids were there too! If this is an affair, then it apparently was a whole family one (minus the aggrieved husband, who no doubt must have felt left out).

Such an embarrassing husband, the woman should request a divorce

I thought I read somewhere that this law had been removed from the books. Am I wrong or did other factors come into play here? 🤔

So basically, in Taiwan you can get sued for sharing a hotel room with a married person even if you’re just watching Netflix and eating instant noodles. That’s not protecting marriage, that’s just state-sponsored blue-balling with extra paperwork.

Its not a crime anymore likes to go to jail , which sometimes happened before as sex with a non-married partner was forbidden. In this case the court gave the husband money for damage done to his marriage rights.

from google

**Civil Consequences of Extramarital Sex**

- While cheating is no longer a criminal offense (you cannot go to jail for it), it remains a breach of the marital obligation of fidelity under Taiwan’s Civil Code
- A betrayed spouse can sue the cheating partner and/or the third party in civil court for financial compensation (damages) for emotional distress and violation of marital rights.

Watch this short report for more context on the evolution of marriage rights and legal changes in Taiwan:

So the judge is saying you have to tell your spouse where you are at all times and who you are with and what you are doing and if you spent sometime with the opposite sex you’ve committed some kind of ‘crime’ that needs to be punished …idiocy.

That’s not the same thing. Feelings versus legal punishment. Also the other person spending time with a married person has to pay out money. So the judge is saying you can’t spend time with a married person as a friend or you’ll risk paying out money ? So hanging out with a married person overnight could cost you 100k or 200k?

Making it a ‘crime’ that you need to pay money for is ridiculous.

I think some US states still have fault-based divorce.

From my understanding, if you catch your spouse cheating, that significantly improves your chances of receiving a favorable treatment in the divorce proceedings. So in a way, the US know the same concept of “damages” for breaking a marriage.

North Carolina (among others) even seems to have a law much more similar to Taiwan’s where you can actually sue a third party for damaging a marriage:

> **[Alienation of affections](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alienation_of_affections)**
>
> Alienation of affections (sometimes called homewrecker law) is a common law tort in some jurisdictions, wherein a civil lawsuit action is brought by a spouse against a third party alleged to be responsible for damaging the marriage, most often referring to one that has ended in divorce. The defendant in an alienation of affections suit is typically an adulterous spouse's lover, although family members, counselors, and therapists or clergy members who have advised a spouse to seek divorce have Th...
