You know you're back in Taiwan, when

When you see people wearing face masks. I flew back on the 24th from Europe, my last flight from Korea to Taiwan you could see Taiwanese with masks (Koreans for the most part what I saw in town, very few had masks and in Baltics/Nordics less than 1%)

Does it?

You go out to eat with the family and get your bill for NTD1500 (restaurants are outrageous in the US now).

Joking aside, the mask wearing does seem to be unique to Taiwan. Why, I don’t know.

If anyone who flies in wants to disagree with this feel free to explain why.

I guess China is the same.

Why ? I think we have whole other thread with about a bazillion posts talking about it although the answer has never been super clear.

But not beeping the way they do everywhere else.

You get run over on a pedestrian crossing by a bus, a car, a blue truck, or a scooter who fails to stop.

The trains run on time but there’s no way to dry your hands in public toilets.

You are in a restaurant and have to use a QR code and order food on your phone.

You are surrounded by noise (Taipei City). Will it ever be quiet? (When all scooters and cars are electric and the urban renewal has “finished” or at least not happening on every corner?).

You have an amazing selection of whisky, all cheaper than in the countries where they were produced.

Absolutely.

Spirit-makers have good reason to establish a presence in Taiwan; there is a great return on investment. Taiwan’s import taxes for spirits are based on alcohol content and volume, not value. This makes for more affordable products to consumers while encouraging distillers to market premium products. In fact, Scotch brands generate higher margins in Taiwan than most other export markets by pushing their higher-end bottles.
