Your dogs are so stinky

I moved out of my previous apartment because of the attitude towards my puppies in the area.

The security guards didn’t like them, and kept blaming me for things they hadn’t done.

Residents would come up to me in the street and tell me to stop letting my dogs crap everywhere – they never crap anywhere except on paper at home and in long grass in a disused lot nearby. There was lots of crap on the sidewalks, none from my puppies.

A guy threw a chair at my oldest puppy once because, seeing that the guy and his coworkers were eating yummy food at an outside table, she (my pup) ran over to them, wagging her tail, and sat down nearby looking hopeful (and never making a noise). Fortunately, she dodged.

Another guy kicked my puppy in the face, making her whine and hide behind me, because she was “too close” and he “thought she would bite him”. I told him I was sorry, I hadn’t realised he was scared of tiny puppies, and thereby engendered the only physical fight I’ve ever been in in Taiwan, ending in my having to be dragged away from the (prone, bleeding) guy by the security guards. A Taiwanese friend of mine later (magically) discovered the guy’s name and address and wanted to go and have a talk with him – having calmed down somewhat myself, I was able to persuade him to let it go, at length.

So we moved about three hundred yards down the road. People here are awesome. The security guards are great – one of them is petrified of dogs and hides every time he sees them, but has told us it’s his problem, not ours. Lots of people have dogs and all congregate in the little avenue park downstairs in the evenings to socialise and let the dogs play. There are a few strays, all of whom are healthy and friendly and looked after. Our neighbours never complain.

We got real lucky, in the end.

Hello all, just recently my neighbors have started to complain as well. For the last 6 years it’s been fine. But over the years my one dog has changed to 3 and that’s too much for them.

The security guard stopped my girlfriend and gave her a long speech which included that my dogs were shitting in people’s gardens, and that there was a flea infestation and that TWO people have been bitten. One of which lives half a block away from me…the other of which has two cats. He said they would have to spend 10,000nt to have the parking garage sprayed.

I went and talked to him and he took back most of what he said saying that he never claimed that it was my dogs. He also said that the fleas are biting people…IN THEIR CARS. So supposedly my dogs’ fleas are jumping off them…and breaking into people’s cars. Meanwhile myself, my girlfriend…and my two roommates have no flea bites on us.

The problems with my neighbors started when they phoned the pound on my dogs because I would sometimes let them play in the HUGE empty field across from my house. I argued with some of them (big mistake) and they kept telling me to keep my 3 dogs on a leash…and I kept asking them “why?” to which they couldn’t answer.

And I know a lot of you will agree they should be kept on a leash…in my particular situation I don’t think it applys…since my dogs when not on a leash just lie in the middle of the empty field and play together.

Anyway…I’m also looking for a stand alone house…with a yard…price is no object. I’m sick of my peasant neighbors.

My place is a house with a yard (albeit very small)

I think to have no complaints you would have to live at least a mile away from your closest neighbor.

I think it is a testament to the average Taiwanese dog owner that back in the days when few people owned dogs, yet there huge numbers of strays, none of these problems seemed to be anything like as prevalent as they are now. Strays don’t seem to crap on the sidewalk, owned dogs are trained to do that. Strays, living outside, don’t seem to engage in boredom barking or territorial barking unless in a pack, and packs move around. Strays aren’t usually in place for long enough for the smell to become a problem either.
I used to live in an area that famous for it’s packs of stray dogs and yet my current ‘quiet’ neighborhood is noisier and more shit-covered than the old one, all thanks to the local dog owners. It sucks that you, more responsible, owners have to deal with the anger created by the actions (or inactions) of the selfish majority. I think you need to put more effort into improving the behaviour of other dog owners in your neighborhood if you want to live in harmony with the non owners. It’s not enough to stand on your doorstep and explain that it isn’t your dog that is the problem. Unless you want to keep moving house you might start to focussing on improving the situation rather than pointing out that you’re not responsible for it.

<-- flameproof suit on

I have had problems in the past with neighbors complaining about my dog. I have found the best way is to nip any crap from neighbors in the bud, and not sit around and wait for them to write notes, etc. You don’t have to take any crap from strangers.

One of the problems is that Taiwanese apartments do not have dedicated service elevators you can take your pets in. I usually don’t get in if there are people in the elevator, or I ask their permission. I kind of have an idea now of who likes my dog and who doesn’t appreciate riding with her. I usually carry with me a small canister of air freshener for a quick elevator spray. I started doing this after getting in the elevator right after a neighbor’s dog had exited. It does smell, no matter how clean you think your dog is.

You can buy a dog bed from Amimals Taiwan. It’s just a giant fully washable fleece cushion and the dog will love it. Best of all, the stuffing is impregnated with cedar chips to deter bugs, and within a day or two your dog will smell of cedar. I kid you not.
They’re dirt cheap, too as the colour on the label has gone sticky and transferred to the fleece. 20 seconds rubbing with a little industrial alcohol takes care of it and its as good as new – which it is, of course. Never used.

Trust Sandman to have some industrial alcohol lying around.

You do know, don’t you, that they put water into that acohol that’s supposed to be used for human consumption, right? Christ! The very IDEA! Fish FUCK in water, for god’s sake!

Soapy water doesn’t give that much of a buzz, though. My way’s better.
