Youtube "This video is not available in your country"

A video I was watching the day before yesterday suddenly became unavailable yesterday with youtube stating “This video is not available in your country”. I then encountered the message a few times as I flicked through different videos. And today, a youtube video I clicked through google to barred me in the same way. Are they becoming heavy-handed, or is this totally new anyway? Anyone notice a difference in content availability in the last few days?

Bizarre. I thought the Internet was borderless (unless the country itself sets up barriers to Internet free speech, as does China).
Bizarre. I thought the Internet was borderless (unless the country itself sets up barriers to Internet free speech, as does China).
You’ve never tried to watch programmes streamed from US TV channels’ websites, then? Due to copyright stuff and other reasons, lots of companies only stream to the countries where they’re based. That’s what’s going on here. Apparently, Youtube now allows content providers to restrict availability by geographical area. Determined people in other places can find ways round it, of course. But it’s understandable that a company that pays for making programmes/producing music wants to have some say in where that content is available.

Nope. Never tried that.

BitTorrent works for me.

Can you watch iPlayer in Taiwan, joesax?
BitTorrent works for me.
Exactly, if they allowed people to buy their stuff, maybe they will sell more?

All this “not available in your country/language” and region encoding will only drive people towards other means.

Rights agreements mean that BBC iPlayer television programmes are only available to users to download or stream (Click to Play) in the UK. However, we are aware of demand for an international version.

Most radio programmes are available outside the UK in addition to podcasts, although sporting and other programmes may be subject to rights agreements.

In addition, many BBC News programmes are available for viewers outside the UK, as are BBC Sport highlights.

Do make sure you check for the latest updates on BBC iPlayer or contact your own country’s broadcasters to find out if they offer a similar service to BBC iPlayer.
That sucks. It’s pretty ace. I like all the corny historical dramas; Dickens dramatisations and stuff. Helps me focus at work.

Scarface: what’s your country (presently)?

Taiwan.

I was trying to watch Bathtime in Clerkenwell just yesterday on Youtube and I kept getting that message that it is not available in my country. (“My” country, really? Or just the country I happen to be located in right now?) I eventually found a version which worked. Go figure. :loco:

BTW, Bathtime in Clerkenwell is pretty neat. :lick:

There are several good ways to defeat this ‘not available in your country’ bullshit. Here’s a link to get you started youtube.com/watch?v=BGJt1Tk90ks

FWIW this is the method that’s working best for me right now. – WAY 2 by JEFFERSON019:

  1. Install Firefox: mozilla.com/firefox/
  2. Install Plugin ProxySel: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire….
  3. Go to checkedproxylists.com
click full proxy list(right) } then (CSV file) } download one new csv file.
  4. Import csv file to Firefox click: ProxySel }Import - Export Proxylist }Import File } overwrite or append Proxylist
  5. Set it to “united states” and it works

You could try free anonymizer sites which use proxy addresses, though I don’t know if they’ll make a difference. Here are two:

url.sc/
privax.us/

I’ve never seen the “not available” message, but I don’t often look at copyrighted stuff on youtube.

I was enjoying a bit of Rammstein on youtube yesterday.

All their videos worked except from one, that would be “Mann gegen mann”.

Given that porn is not legal here, I am not too surprised (Some male nudity is visible in it).

I lived in Taiwan for 10 years and I had no idea porn was illegal. It’s everywhere!
