Great, I was always hoping to find a site where I can match caterpillars and butterflies. Cool. :sunglasses:

A scenic area guide showed us the back end of a male purple crow yesterday down in Maolin. Interesting. It smells too.

Butterfly porn!

You do realize that those are its sex organs!

You mean they aren’t pom-poms?

We had a good time down there. The weather was not perfect, hazy in the afternoon. Make sure to get up early when the sun is still out. At Maolin town the guide told us that the butterflies usually come down to the street near the “audio-video center” (can’t remember the correct name, you know what I mean), but since it had been raining before our visit, they stayed up in the mountain. He took us on a side track and then into the forest, and there they were thousands of them. Make sure to bring a good tele lens. It was very dark there so a bit difficult to get good shots.

A few other things we did and you might be interested in. A bit north of Maolin is the village of Dajin (on the right side of the Laonong) and there we visited a date (jujube?) farm. The farmer introduced us to a new variety he has been cultivating, nearly the size of a tennis ball and juicy. Good stuff. The farm is at No. 172 on Hwy 27. The farmer and his wife are super friendly. They also grow big fat papayas.

Also, we did walk up the hill behind Baolai, there is a trail there, named Pulaixitou. They are currently building a new pavilion and rebuilding part of the trail. Up there is a plum orchard and the trees are in full bloom. Pretty. From up there you have nice views, especially into the side valley of the Baolai River.

The suspension bridge on the way to Duona is repaired right now, so I don’t think you can walk up there. At Duona they told us that the hot springs will be rebuild in the future, but not sure when. I walked by a restaurant (an old lady selling corn on the knob) and she invited me to try a bit of muntjac, half of the animal was lying there on the table. She also sells gasoline. Interesting place. :s

i was just there a while ago…

google did this for my photos

Google? Making a GIF out of photos?

yup, i just upload my pictures to google+ (picasaweb), and google seems to be detection if there are similar photos taken in a sequence, and automatically make gifs out of them.

Saw this moth at Duona in the Maolin National Scenic Area.

that is one amazing looking moth!

Asota tortuosa?

Abraxas cupreilluminata Inoue?

According to the following Flickr image, it could be an Abraxas cupreilluminata Inoue:

That Flickr account as a lot of moth images. Cool.

discovered by Hiroshi Inoue (井上 寬) in 1984… that dude discovered a whole bunch of Abraxas endemic to Taiwan…

Saw this one today. Not that special, but not every creature can be special, right?
