Moving to Kaohsiung in Sep, which district to live in?

Hi all,
I am moving down to Kaohsiung in September to study at NSYSU. I visited the place twice and know only a little about it. I’d appreciate if you could tell me about the districts to look for an apartment. I’ve heard about Gushan and Sanmin districts which are meant to be nicer places to live rather than living in downtown (in terms of little bit more open space, fresh air and so on…). Many thanks!

Im also going to NSYSU this sept too.

I am also interested in this question, if anyone knows

Ditto

I plan to stay in the university halls for the first year and find an apartment for my second.

University accomidation is very cheap 13,000 per month in the international dorm with one roommate and half that for the standard dorms.

The downside seems to be some quite restrictive rules, no female guests are allowed without both prior permission and special circumstances (ie. you want her to do heavy lifting for you) :noway:

Out of curiousity, what are you guys going to study, I will do the International MBA ( :bravo: taught in English :bravo: )

I am taking beginning entry level mandarin

sounds like the 3 of ya should find an apt together and you have an instant wolf pack for hunting at nite?

Alex, 13,000 a month? that MUST be a typo.
If you want to live outside the university beyond any reasonable doubt the nicest area near there is CaiShan but it is VERY difficult to find a house there. It took me about 6 months of very hard looking and I ended up buying a restaurant in terrible condition to get something in that area.
Some of the accomadation at the bottom of the mountain in GuShan area is not too expensive and will mostly be closer to the Uni than say SanMin. Actually the Uni is in a very nice location. I have never been into the dorms though.

Oops, sorry, I meant 13000 a semester (6500 a semester for the local dorms).

As for sharing a flat, I have heard far worse ideas, with a flat, we’ll have far more freedom with our own single rooms.

Though, Dan, if you are studying Chinese, then wouldn’t it be more immersive to share a room with 3 local students.

Go to the yahoo group “Kaohsiung Living.” A lot of people are leaving now, or will be in August. You should be able to get an apartment that way. If you share with a foreigner that’s already here, you could probably get away with paying between $3,500NT to $8,000NT per month, depending on the location. Moreover, you’d have easy access to information about the city and someone to hang out with till you find your own friends. And, of course, no curfew or restriction on female guests. :stuck_out_tongue: As for living close to the university, if you’re going to be here for a few while, you’ll probably want to buy a scooter from someone moving, too. You could get a second-hand one for as low as $5,000NT, depending on what shape it’s in and whether or not it has papers. With a scooter, nothing’s too far away! And the new MRT has a stop close to the university, too.

Gushan and Sanmin are good districts to live in. They are downtown as far as I’m concerned. If you get a place around Love River, somewhere between Cisian Rd and Wufu Rd, then everything will be extra convenient for you.

Thanks for the heads-up Percephone, I am looking through kaohsiungliving.com now.
