Sex Offender Heaven

If he’s here on a foreign passport, he can be kicked out as an undesirable alien and put on a plane back to the US, where the police can be waiting to take him into custody.

I agree. It should be right up Apple Daily’s street - they should be able to track the guy down easily enough (by using the contact info on Tealit or wherever, and pretending to make an appointment for a game of tennis, an English lesson, or whatever), and then take lots of pictures to flash his mug all over their newspaper with a lurid account of his doings and commentary about the kinds of people that are being allowed into Taiwan to teach. Perhaps a legislator could be induced to get on to the case, give MOI and MOE officials a hard time in the LY, and make sure that something is done about him if anything can be.

It was this thread I believe…she is still in Taiwan as far as I know.

Thanks Chewy.

I remember a few years back being offered a virgin child to shag down in Ximending for NT$3,000, AFAIR. It’s not that uncommon, especially down south.

Are you sure it wasn’t just a store salesman trying to sell you some Xmas nativity scene figureines? If it is true, that’s shocking. Sad world we live in.
Well, apparently our resident pedophile frequents Forumosa, because he’s deleted his esldewey profile that is linked in the original post. But this one is even more to the point (see link below) - He’s looking for more english-speaking tennis students. That means YOUR KIDS Forumosans. People should be aware … if not upset that Taiwan authorities allow a fugitive sex offender to put more kids at risk so brazenly.

Uhh…I’m certainly not trying to defend the guy, but try reading the ad again.
He’s not looking for your children, or students.
He’s simply looking for a tennis partner.

Did you read the weblink from the Bellevue police on the first page of this thread?
In February, 2004, Wesley Lu was convicted of 3 counts of Child Molestation – Third Degree. He was given SSOSA (supervised treatment) at sentencing. His victim was a teenaged tennis student of his whom he groomed into a sexual relationship.

He has been under the supervision of the Washington State Department of Corrections.
Wesley Lu is in violation of his registration requirements, his sentencing conditions and has failed to appear at trial on charges of Possession of Child Pornography.
Calling Taiwan a heaven for sex offenders is just really irresponsible of you. One person on the run does not make Taiwan a heaven. Why dont you just post the news about the guy without your sensationalist, bullshit generalizations about Taiwan.

Taiwan is not a heaven for foreign sex offenders any more than it is a heaven for foreign idiots.
Taiwan is a heaven for convicted sex offenders. This guy is a repeat, convicted child molester who fled the US and lives openly TEACHING ENGLISH in Taiwan. What a messed up place.

Sex offender fails to appear for trial

Bellevue police are looking for a fugitive sex offender who failed to appear for trial. The fugitive is Wesley Lu, 26, who may have fled to Taiwan, said Officer Greg Grannis, Bellevue police spokesman. Lu is charged in King County Superior Court with possession of sexual depictions of a minor. A warrant with a $1.5 million bail has been issued for his arrest. Lu has a previous conviction for child molestation and is supposed to register his address with the King County sheriff. He earlier had registered at a Bellevue address but is no longer living there and his location is unknown, Grannis said Thursday. Lu was convicted of three counts of child molestation in 2004. Further information about Lu is available on the Bellevue police Web site at bellevuepolice.net.

Dunno, the point that there is no means to stop sex offenders coming to Taiwan was well made, methinks, and something anyone serious about the Engrish teaching industry ought to consider.

Al it’s going to take is a few loud cases and the rep of English teachers will take a further, savage hit. What sort of legislation will the government then explore?

castrate all english teachers! better safe than sorry

seriously tho i wonder what this guys next move will be…he’ll get wind he’s been rumbled pretty quick methinks and then flee taiwan equally quickly…the taiwan govt. has the right to kick him out but not the right to enforce an extradition to his home country…

Therefore, we can conclude…

I think it has more to do with lax law enforcement here. Not who is or isn’t a foreigner, or what profession they are in. Somehow I suspect this guy (Wesley Lu) has a Taiwan passport and family ties here … whether he is ‘Taiwanese’ or ‘American’ is beside the point.

There is another current case I’m hearing about where a Taiwanese guy broke into a western female’s rooftop flat and abused her for a couple hours while taking pictures. (He didn’t touch her, but only forced her to ‘do things’ while he took pictures.)

Anyway, he lives right near the girl and police adamantly refuse to do anything ‘for lack of proof.’ They refuse to go into the guys flat to retrieve the camera and pics …

Law enforcement here is very subjective, spotty at best … and puts anyone living here at heightened risk. It is a real cost of living here that people can lose sight of.

One way or another, this fugitive should be locked up.

Therefore, we can conclude…
…Oi! Get yer hand off me knob-end, ya pervert!

Taiwan has been an effective haven for that fugitive for the last two years running. End of story. If that bothers you, go elect someone other than mafia figures, representatives who will write law and insist on real enforcement … shooting the messenger and whining just makes you look silly.

The problem with Taiwan lies in the fact that it cannot sign extradition treaties with any other country because it is itself not considered a state/nation/entity for those matters.

Hence, what even in my neck of the woods country, where we have deals with INTERPOL, FBI and DEA, a warning comes up when one of these perverts gets to the airport and is red-flagged (and hence they are not allowed in the country, or at least, detained promptly if the US embassy allows it, of course), Taiwan, with all its computer infrastructure, and interconectivity, and e-Governence, does not have access to this data and teh authorities behind it and hence, remains unaware and unprotected from warnings. Correct me if I’m wrong on this regard.

I remember back home they used to broadcast America’s most wanted, and several kidnappers, murderers, etc. hiding there were caught as a result. They also used to broadcast a program from Spain, and I remember a case where a couple of kids kidnapped by their father were returne dto their motehr after being identified there. Now, from England or other places you would need more cooperation and broadcasting, but in the Internet era that shouldn’t be as hard. recently there was an APB on papers and Internet, offering a substantial reward for an “ecoterrorist” -though our authorities complained they were not told first.

The other problem is Taiwan’s fierce overprotection of its citizens…even when they screw up. I know of several Taiwanese who are on the lam from the law forces in Central America, hiding here in the island, not even in the Mainland, since they are untouchable. That does not foster cooperation when the tables are turned.

I would have thought anyone working with children should present their affidavit of not having a criminal history. Alas, logic does not work like that.

The Taiwan authorities know who he is, how to find him, and what he’s done.

His cached profile at Esldewey states that he worked at Hess and at the Manadarin Daily Newspaper.

If the government can’t do it we’ll have to take care of it ourselves.

How about a section on Taiwanted?

Taiwanted’s Most Wanted.

Be vigilant, vigilantes.

You must be new here.

How do you know he is not an ROC Citizen or holding a Taiwan Overseas Chinese Passport?

BZZZZTTTTTT WRONG

Taiwan has exteadition trieaties with other countries including… CHINA.

Formal diplomatic recognition or lack of it does not prevent two countries signing treaties with each other.
