The Islands Thread

I’m setting up links to the various threads on travel to the islands (Green, Orchid, Penghu, etc.). Please don’t post in this thread unless you are linking. Good articles and such welcome.

The Welcome to Taiwan site has some information.

A little bit of self promotion as I just posted about .

If anyone’s interested - two friends and I once went to Taichung Harbour last year winter, and were thinking we could get to Penghu from there. Of course, there was nothing going there, and everyone kept telling us we should’ve flown there. In the end, we didn’t get there, but it is interesting to note that the local operator of boat-tours offered to take us there for $6,000 only. Of course, that’d have been a one-way trip, but the boat could’ve held quite over a dozen persons.

This just leads me to think that anyone could pretty much charter someone, anyone’s boat from any port in Taiwan, to within a reasonably distanced destination for a not-too-expensive price.

These are links to my webpages on Penghu and Orchid Island, both very worthwhile destinations. Elsewhere on the site are travelogues from around Taiwan and the region in general.

More info about the east of Taiwan.

NT$1000 for every tourist to Penghu

latest on Turtle Mountain Island (Guishan Dao / Guīshān Dǎo / 龜山島)

The October issue of Taiwan Review has four articles on the offshore islands. And at NT$55 it really is a bargain. Well worth picking up a copy for those who are interested in maritime Formosa.

I am going to go to Jinmen for the first time the weekend of January 15-16. I will have an afternoon to kill before the Jinmen Marathon the next day. Any recommendations on what I should do?

Thread on

Hi, I’m going to Penghu on 25th-26th later this month. Anyone can recommend a good place to stay, and what are the key place o interest to vsit? Prefer natural scenic areas and trails. Or are there any 1 day tours I can book on the island itself? Not planning to rent cars or scooters, so everything will be by foot or public transport.

Hi everyone!

I’m visiting Taipei in late February to March. I read about the Matsu islands and would love to see them as well. So I’ve been doing some research and found out UNI Air flies to both Beigan and Nangan but I want to know if taking a ferry would be a better option. Can anyone give me info on this? Also I would love to stay at one of the Fujian homestays in Beigan… can somebody give me info on this as well?

Thanks!

I set this website up in 2006 - mainly because, living on Penghu, so many people kept asking me where to go, I felt the easiest way to reply was via a website.
There’s quite a bit which needs to be updated - new/additional restaurants, Unfaithful pub has closed (now an Indonesian workers hang-out). Planning on updating it soon; also for cycling - what a great place! Hire bikes possible in Magong, bike stations at the airport & most towns; great coastal bike paths along the coast line - especially Guo Ye (planning to put all this on the website soon).

Cognac is now a great wine bar (beeras wel, no cocktails) & not expensive. Check out Havanna for superb food, not expensive, & the best cocktails in the offshore islands.

Was last there in 1990…Wow, it’s changed.

Best Adventures on Taiwan’s East Coast” – has useful travel and sightseeing information on Green Island, Orchid Island…

Here is a link to my website on Penghu. There are semi-regualr posts about the Islands and lots of information on camping, sightseeing, accommodation and more. It’s a non-profit informational site designed to help foreign tourists and newcomers to the islands. There are also loads of great photos of the islands. Happy travels.
