Trojan problems again :(

:s solved my recent spyware issue with spybot… now my AVG tells me I have Trojan horses galloping around my C drive. They are now in the “virus vault” but it tells me i can’t heal them…

apparently there are 6 of them in C:/documentsandsettings/me/local settings.
I can’t find any folder that is called “local settings” in C:/documents and settings/me

How do i fix this?

Can’t you delete them from the fault? Though if they are in the vault they should not do harm anymore (I think).

The “local settings” directory is hidden, you can make it visible by using the Explorer, then select Tools/Options/View and look for the ‘Hidden files and folders’ under ‘Advanced Settings’. Select ‘Show hidden files and folders’.
Alternatively go to Start and click ‘Run’. Now enter “cmd” and click ‘OK’. You should be in C:\Documents and Settings\me. Then type “cd local settings” and hit enter/return. Now you can use “dir” to see the content. Use “del filename.ext” to delete selected files or “del.” to delete all files in that folder.

Hmmm~ Interesting… I had Norton popping up a couple of times (a few days ago) reporting blocked trojans… each one from different IPs…

Assuming the ‘vault’ is the same as ‘quarantine’ in some other software, I think this means they’re safely isolated from the rest of your system, and you can just safely ignore them for all eternity.

In AVG terminology, ‘heal’ means to take a real file that has been infected and restore it to its original uninfected state. This is because old viruses would try to sneak inside existing files such as programs or documents. Nowadays most malware are standalone and do not try infecting existing files in your system. Such files cannot be healed because they never were a legitimate file to begin with. This should not be any reason for worry, and you can have AVG delete them from the vault instead if you want to be completely rid of them.

So when I remove them from the virus vault they are out of my computer then? I can’t understand why after having a computer for god knows how long, it’s only been the lat few weeks that I’ve experienced all these problems. I don’t think my internet browsing habits have changed… and i’ve been using the same anti-virus software for zonks… plus windows defender and now spybot. Anything I download, esp. torrent files, I always scan first before opening them.

Now I keep getting an internet explorer message about a script on my page is causing IE to run slowly… i don’t even use IE. can’t seem to get rid of that now either!!! :fume:

My beloved little laptop i bought 2 years ago has been completely revamped as well!!! HP, for some unknown reason, has replaced my motherboard three times, my display, and my hard-drive all for free and all within the past month. So i technically have a brand new computer (parts wise)… and now i’m having all these problems. :frowning:

Thanks for all the tips, guys. I really appreciate it.

Stop downloading porn off of limewire and you won’t have this problem! :unamused:

I just last I week found a trojan in a web site of a Forumosan member … a few links on it’s website linked to pages that had trojan code in it … the site link should be gone, MM deleted it …

This came up …

The pop-up said … “You have chosen to open Free_Internet_Security_Scan(CLICK_RUN).exe” … which is a: BIN file from: ht tp : //internet-security-scan.com

According to Google, this “scan” contains this virus: "infected by Trojan.Win32.StartPage.kk

:upyours:

Once your infected it’s almost impossible to clean it all out. Viruses spread and hide. There is a good chance your system is currently a zombie. The only solution is wipe the hard drive and re-install.

I would try this before doing something so drastic.

If your just surfin’ e-mailin’ and watchin’ vidoes, consider moving to a Linux distribution and rest assured that you will not have these problems. Otherwise, don’t click on anything that has and “…”.exe attachement that you download from a random website.

Why just for web and videos? What special needs do people have that they have to run Windows? Is someone designing cars with AutoCAD or Pro/E (which should actually be running on Linux, IIRC) on their home computers? Designing schematics and doing PCB layouts for the next generation of LCD TVs with OrCAD or Protel? Or why else would people moan about an infected computer, but at the same time claim “But I have to use Windows”…? If you want to get infected, do so, but remember that it was your choice!

About two years back, Microsoft themselves recommended to re-format a harddrive and re-install Windows in case of spyware infections, since they had no idea how to actually clean an infected system. Recommending Trendmicro as a solutions is… well… I wouldn’t want to touch any of their products anymore. Been there, done that. They are about the same as Symantec, still profiting from old glory and being busy preventing people from noticing what crap they make these days.

Actually, I wonder how many of those whining about infections are running their computer from an administrator account…
