100 Illegal Things

…people do in Taiwan because of a lack of law enforcement.

How about making a list and see how fast we can get to 100?

I’ll start with the first 10 from the top of my head.

  1. Bicyclists running red light.
  2. Abandoning cats and dogs.
  3. Spitting betel nut juice on the street.
  4. Parking in no parking zones.
  5. Illegal farming in the mountains.
  6. Adults and kids on bike, kids without helmet.
  7. Dumping trash near country roads.
  8. Swimming where swimming is prohibited.
  9. Hiking where hiking is prohibited.
  10. Surfing during before/during/after typhoon.

Crikey, what an uplifting and encouraging little thread this is. Surfing at the wrong time? Wait, just wait, and I will pass you that straw you are grasping for. There ya go.

How about you write a list of 100 laws you have broken, or 100 laws people break in your home country? How about a list of 100 reasons why you should be grateful to live in Taiwan?

I just don’t get the point of walking about and criticising everything around you. Why don’t you do something to improve your quality of life, instead of trying to collect other negative nellies to be in your gang?

Seriously, surfing at the wrong time? Swimming in a prohibited place? Dumping trash? You’ll get splinters scraping about in the bottom of a barrel like that.

  1. The passing of straws that, quite frankly, are just not big enough.
  1. Barrel scraping on Sundays in January.
  2. The wearing of straw hats during the pentecost.

Thread killer…

I was just thinking about a summary of things that could be improved in Taiwan by enforcing existing laws. I think it is an interesting fact of life in Taiwan that the laws are in place, but the police is not enforcing them. A bicyclist runs a red light and passes a policeman at the side of the road. No reaction by the policeman, nothing. Doesn’t mean that it is better in my home country. Just an observation of life in Taiwan.

No, it is Them vs Us behaviour. Or Here vs There. It’s worse than pointless, it’s jamming a stick in a beehive behaviour. In my mind at least.

No, no. I am happy to include myself in the group of offenders.

  1. Turning right on a red light. (It’s illegal, I have done it and will do it again. Blame the lack of law enforcement.)
  1. Taxis waiting for or dropping off passengers in bus zones.

Ok. In the words of The Beautiful South Carry on Regardless.

  1. Use of firecrackers in urban areas (officially banned in 2008)
  1. Burning of ghost money
  2. Fishing in rivers where fish is protected (like in Pingling)
  3. Shops giving customers free plastic bags
  4. Eateries serving food using disposable dishes
  5. Roadside vendors without licence
  1. Adultery

Trolling on Forumosa.
Smurfing.
Slashing at the little people from the saddle of a moral high horse.

  1. Riding a scooter with malfunctioning headlight at night.
  2. Riding a bicycle in a park with signs saying not to do so.
  3. Feeding pidgeons and squirrels in a park with signs saying not to do so.
  4. Running outdoor karaoke machine businesses in parks and hill areas around the city.

smoking in a pub.
dropping a cigarette butt.

  1. Building and renting rooftop houses with stupidly fake roofs.
  2. Having gas cylinders indoors.
