Oh that’s pretty cool. I’ve never heard of this before. I might be interested in watching some of these…

As for competing in, the only event where I’ve participated at a somewhat advanced level would be ultimate frisbee. But still no chance to compete at an international level, even for 35+

I’m interested in the following: life saving, surfing, canoe (K1 &K2), swim (long distance). Send me a message if keen to team up for the World Masters Games.

Because I need to report about the games and want to experience what it’s like to be a participant, I just signed up for the only category I am remotely qualified for, the 10k road run.

Will start training tomorrow morning. I have not run in like forever. I guess I will be ready next May. No one will care if I finish last or at all anyway.

I’d love to do the orienteering, but without the stress of competition, just the search and explore part would be cool, also in a group. Should be fun.

Anyone else going to participate?

I was considering participating in shooting. I am pretty good at the airgun range. It’s really the only sport I am somewhat decent at. I am guessing you need your own gear and that sorta thing, which I dont have. I just use whatever is available at the gun range.

Since I live next to the criterion circuit and ride a road bike and am a full 60 year old veteran I should really register for the cycling.

How much does it cost?

Around NT$3,000 for residents, depending on time of application. Early bird until September I believe.

I see boules is listed as an event. I enjoy boules because you don’t have to do much. I am tempted to register.

I’m going to participate in the 10km and have also signed up for the half marathon (21km) in case my fitness improves over the next few months.

I suggest joining local races to get a feel for running in Taiwan. I’ve done a few (3km, 4km and 9km) and was surprised by how popular they are. You’ll see people of all ages, including teenagers, kids, elders, and even blind runners . These races can also help keep you motivated.

Race fees are usually under 1000 NTD, and they often include a t-shirt, bib, medal, timing chip, and sometimes gifts from local sponsors.

Do they ask for certain cutoff times or can you just go and register?
The triathlon or aquathlon look tempting :yum:

For the cycling they say you can’t have competed in a UCI sanctioned race in the last year. But then they ask for your race license. I mean they’ve got over 85s as a race category, I doubt those guys will have a race license.

I try to figure out what it means to have so many age groups, road running or road cycling. Is each age group running/cycling separately (not likely if there is like one 85 year old) or is everyone going out together and then the winners are later announced based on the age group they are in?

Not sure about cycling, but many (all?) sports seem to have recreational/professional contests. So the license might be needed if you want to compete in the “professional” race? They somehow have to separate the former Olympians from the slightly out of shape types, right?

Nah I doubt they’ll enforce the racing license. Taiwan for example doesn’t have them. And for older riders there’s little reason to get one.

My interest has been piqued by these Games. I need some sort of short term extracurricular goal, and I think picking a couple of events and training for them could be good fun.

The link below shows the results from the 2017 Games, so you can see what sort of target you’d be aiming for in the runnings and jumpings and throwings. Having said that, it’s not all that straight forward understanding the results. Some race results and categories aren’t lumped together, like some of the short and middle distance races.

The road race 10k is at the end of the document.

If I can go sub 14 seconds in the 100 meters I can medal (over 55s).

If I see this correctly, I’d need to run the 10k in 35 minutes to be in the top few of my category. Alright, first I have to make sure I can run the 10k without stopping… Fast walking takes me about 90min so far. I think I will manage to beat the 2hr mark.:older_man:

That’s the spirit and the main idea behind the games. Get older farts off the sofa.

Yes but 48 minutes gets you sixth

How bad do I need a medal?

The past three days I have walked 6k each morning. Next I will insert some running and increase the distance. I think I can do 10k by September. It’s kind of exciting. Starting basically from no running at all.

Fool. You’ve misunderstood the mission. Just run the 100 meters. Finish in 15 seconds and you could be in the final.
