A Pub is not a Pub when

It sells meals, not snacks.
It charges on the door. ( PUBLIC house)
They employ bouncers.
There is no draught beer especially bitter.
The barman can’t remember you name.
There are dress restrictions.
Everybody inside is wearing a suit!
They over charge.

In other words, there are very few pubs in Taiwan !
Anything to add ?
Cheers!

If he can’t remember his own name, it’s okay then.

dont forget the free peanuts

Huh? Never heard of pub grub? Baked beans and beer at lunchtime…You’re making me homesick.

  • All beer is by the bottle only.
  • They haven’t got Guinness on tap
  • The so-called “pub” is based in Taiwan
  • It is impossible to hear your mates talk over the music

They give you a bottle without a glass.
They hand you a microphone and ask you to sing some old song that,’ was a hit before your mother was born.’
Give you a menu.
Pubs are for drinking, NOT eating.

Pubs are for sitting in all day and getting plastered. You’ve got to have food, even if only as an excuse for an extended liquid lunch of a summer’s afternoon…

I came across very few pubs in Ireland or England that didn’t serve food.

The Gravedigger’s Arms is the only pub in Scotland I can think of that doesn’t serve food. Its a good pub, but its very very far from the norm. And it probably sells food as well, these days.

Sounds like a very tired place. Either that, or a really buff place. Guess it depends on who’s on the throne down “there”.

Also, I have never been to Scotland. How far is “the norm” from say, Glasgow? Is there train and bus service to the norm? How do you suggest one get from the norm into the gravedigger’s arms? Practice?

The norm is easy to find. Look for people wearing khaki Dockers, shopping at B&Q, riding in Ford Focuses, men drinking gassy mass-produced “lager,” their women wearing white stilettoes and drinking Bacardi Breezers and you’ll know you’re near the norm. Lots of busses and trains.
The Diggers is a jam tarts pub so by definition its far from the norm, although its listed on the web so maybe its closer to the norm than I thought.

So its sort of a goth meets gay meets s&m meets role play kinda place?

Sounds like Vancouver, BC.

Ah, pubs… Hmmm, it is not a pub unless:

there’s a seventy-something year old man smilin’ at you as you enter and he’s starting his second pint of Guinness and its only ten in the morning.

your coffee has two shots of whiskey in it.

there are many children running around while their parents socialize(Public House, it includes the whole family).

Aye, I miss the good olde Irish pubs.

What about dancing? Most of the pubs in London that I remember had no dancing, unless people were really drunk and they were singing drinking songs and kind of moving about.

…and a pub has got to have some grub, real stick to your ribs food with gravy poured over everything, even the vegetables.

No pub should contain children unless they are on the menu.

When
… there are not fights erupting over sporting events.
… poor musicians can’t set up in the corner with a guitar and microphone.
… There is no dart board.

Closet Queen, Careful now, your about to get eaten too. Get out of Carnegies and into a real pub with one of your sugar daddy’s some day soon. Might change your mind. By the way feel free to bring that shaver over to my place any day…don’t know why that thread got locked…what a shame.

Agreed! It’s low life scumbuckets who bring their kids to pubs. They’ve no business being there.

What if you are a sophisticated European-style drinker like me? Surely, there is nothing wrong with Mum, Dad, and the kids having lunch in a pub.

Seems like Alien can not tell the difference betwen a pub and what passes for it on the restaruant forum at forumosa either. Come now dear, time to quit those 3am vodka tonics…or one more for the road in them sleazy “bars” you must be hanging out in…
