Back in the 2000s, Abian declared he wanted to develop three sectors: memory chips, displays, and phones. All of them were trashed really badly. All of them are making a comeback.
Taiwanese used a pun, 慘業, to refer to them.
Last week Nanya (memory chips) announced they’re building a new plant, hiring 2,000 people, and using the most advanced process for DRAM (10 nm). Samsung has been so focused on its foundry business it’s underinvesting in memory, and lost its technological lead to Micron (1/3 of whose physical assets are in Taiwan, and has licensed their tech to Nanya).
