Ok i dont have regular tv (too cheap to pay). I used to pay a lot of attention to the olympics and try to watch when can. Now no tv coverage thats free so I have been just on the sidelines but the controversy against Gu!
So they are both born in calif, bay area in fact. Gu having a white dad (much is not public about him) and a first generation mom from China. She lives in Sea Cliff which is a very wealthy enclave in SF . I drive by that area often. Lu was of more modest middle class upbringing. Her dad was a dissident at tienanmen and escaped to the USA by way of HK and became a lawyer of his own firm and quite successful. I believe he has a wife of asian origin but he has several kids all by IVF . Perhaps his wife could not conceive. He (strangely ) prefferred eggs from western donors. Lu’s siblings are not from the same donor.
That aside these two hapa kids are both half chinese and half white. And actually to my eyes they look completely white. Gu speaks fluent mandarin and had been making trips back to china since way back. So she and her mom have strong ties to the motherland. Lu’s dad FAIK has been avoiding China due to his dissident status and I am not even sure Lu even speaks mandarin.
POint is both of these girls are born in the USA , true American girls who look 100pct white American ( i see no asian in either one). And they are both very accomplished young ladies. Gu has more public exposure and more medals and has marketed herself a whole lot more. EArning tens of millions.
I believe that as half chinese and with strong ties to China it is not inconceivable that she may want to represent China especialy with all the govt money and endorsements thrown her way. She is half chinese and speaks mandarin fluently and has a lot of China in her.
Many mmebers of the local public are mad because she has been so successful , if she won nothing nobody would bat an eye really. But shes a winner and also achieved a lot academically and monetarily etc.
If she was half italian and competing for Italy there would be no problem. As with other olympians .
Anyway this usa hate for china !! IN fact the USA really is tied to the waist with China !! IN so many ways. Both parties are really important to each other. But Gu gets caught in all this rivalry .
Shes “unAmerican they say, she a traitor they say” I say bah humbug shes marketing herself the best she can in the true American way. Look at all the American companies that made China great again!!.
And honestly its not like shes competing for Russia. She is half Chinese and she should be able to rep her motherland if she pleases. NOw it would be nice if she can rep the USA in the 2030 Olympics that willl be cool.
Meantime LU is doing great and is an All American girl and the American public loves her…The new American darling. They love to hate Gu but love to love Lu.
At least somewhat unfair in my book.
Well at least the American public could be happy that a lot of Gu’s earnings will be TAXABLE . I don’t think she has given up her US citizenship. Apparently China is allowing “certain” people the right to rep China without being a citizen of is allowing dual citizenship for Olympians and other notables.
Meantime Lu should be able to get a lot of US endorsements too and wont come out tooo shabby. She could get Disney movie rights too. A movie should be made of her come back tale.
And plus shes getting “lifetime” free ice cream the most famous bay area creamery FENTONS.
Gu is more the China girl who looks all white American but American inside to Lu the All American girl who looks all American including her somewhat rebel appearance. The "racoon hair with her brown hair bleached blond in segments. Her unusual piercing and her F bombs all over the place in front of the camera . HAHA truely a Californian girl she is.
