There is a two hour documentary about this “神木之島 The Island and the Trees” that was recently showing on the big screen. The movie itself is not very good but still interesting. Hopefully will end up on Youtube and recut.
Because most of these trees are located on steep hills, it was hard to figure out how far the ground is from the top of the trees, and the researchers made a web tool to crowd source people willing to label the data just out of love. From there they were able to narrow down the super tall trees from a potential list of thousands.
The surveyors then go out to find these trees in the wild.
