Address on APRC

Hi gang,

I’m moving back to the old country. What address do I add to my APRC? I assume my address back in the old country.

What does old country mean?

You should have an address in this country, Taiwan, for them to contact you. Its free and fast, they just want to be able to track, follow and contact you

If you give your overseas address, I would think that indicates to them your intention to not return here to live which could negate your APRC. You could keep it at your old address, since immigration can tell you have left the country. If you have a friend’s address it might be better.
You may want to run that question by immigration if you’re worried

I could rent out a mailing address. For money of course.

Yes. Except. Don’t run that by immigration. At least not with your actual personal information. Get facts anonymously first.

I’m interested, too. I have an good card APRC and when I left Taiwan, I simply left the last address as it is. Not sure if that is the correct thing to do.

If you left in recent years, you got the benefit of being able to leave via online submission. That’s all they requested at that time.

By recent years, I mean the last 10 as per my experience. I followed their request. But they had a 2 year cap on being out of country at that time. 2015 I think.

APRC is also subject to regulations. Please do not assume that just because it has no printed expiration date it is actually not going to expire.

f you want to keep your right to work and reside freely in Taiwan, file a petition online with the NIA BEFORE leaving and voila, you can stay abroad as long as you need but also as long as you fill up the form saying you are interested in keeping your APRC current. Them officials ain’t telepaths.

As per current regulations, you can stay abroad up to 5 years AFTER filing your request. If you do not file a request, then your APRC is forfeit. No, we do not make the regulations. AFAIK, the request is extendable but don’t quote me on that. Ask NIA.

As to the address, the important thing is that it is reliable to communicate with you, meaning that if NIA sends you something, from an invitation to the flag raising ceremony on New Year to a warning they will revoke your APRC unless you get in touch with them promptly, you may receive it.

So , overseas address then?

@fifieldt, do you know if this part is true? As in, do foreign special professionals need to file a request with immigration in order to leave without having their APRC revoked?

I don’t remember hearing of that before. The link below suggests it isn’t necessary, but not sure how reliable it is.

Taiwan APRC FAQ 台灣永久居留證常見問題 - Foreigners in Taiwan - 外國人在臺灣.

Why do you have to apply before?

Again, them officials not telepaths. Maybe you leave for a few months and realize you need to stay longer. No problem, just apply. But if you already know, don’t wait 5 years to apply.

No one said they were telepaths. I just didnt know why you said to apply before leaving when the system is set up to make it easy to apply while abroad.

Where are you getting it from though that people always need to apply before leaving? (Foreign special professionals specifically.)

OP has a plan. He wants to stay abroad a long time. He seems unaware he has to apply in order to leave a long time. Hence, the apply before/telepath comment/advice. And the recommendation to apply before leaving is a good idea if there are any problems. Sure, you can apply after. The system is set for that. No problem. But in OP’s case, I have a feeling he could dot his is here.

I just don’t want him to have the experience of the folks who complain when they find out they overstayed because they assumed their ARC was valid to the date printed on it and not cancelled when it was no longer valid, i.e. they left their school or job.

Back of APRC says it can be revoked per ROC laws.

The immigration act says APRC can be revoked if out of country for 5 years (foreign professionals) or half a year (other categories). You can apply on the site for an exemption to extend this.

Also there should be some law saying it can be revoked for criminal offenses but I can’t find it.

I’m not aware of other laws saying it can be revoked. Also revocation can be appealed.

That’s not what I asked about though, or the thing @Icon wrote that I’m skeptical of. :man_shrugging:

Per the laws, it doesn’t say that you need to apply before leaving. Therefore you don’t need to apply unless you need an exemption to prevent your APRC from getting cancelled.

This is what I thought, which is why I was confused by @Icon saying otherwise.
