Vaguely techie question: how much difference does the extra speed make for “normal” users? For me the internet connection is I suppose an issue when I’m downloading podcasts, downloading TV shows or movies, video chatting in Skype, or streaming video. I’m usually streaming through a VPN anyway - would an increased internet speed at my end make a difference, or is it the VPN (Witopia) that determines the speed?
I see promotions like this and I think “Hey, sounds great!” - but then I start to wonder how it’d actually help me.
It really depends, I upgraded from 10 to 20Mbit/s down and some things are much faster while others aren’t noticeable at all. Had this offer been available a month ago, I would’ve changed provider, as I wanted faster upload speed, but this wasn’t available from the company I’m with.
Still not any offer with a better upload ?
My VDSL2+ offer me 5M up (for 20M DL), but it would be nice if I can have something like 10M or 20M up for a reasonable price.
(I saw an offer from Kbro, but it’s 10M/10M, I prefer keep 20M DL…)
I have 10/2 for $999 from CHT right now which has been just fine for me. I do max out on the 10 Mbit download from time to time, but only when doing heavy downloading. Even when maxed out, I still feel like 10 Mbit is fast enough and never really have a need for it to be 2x or 5x faster. Probably depends on what you’re downloading, but that’s my scenario.
Uploads are a different story. I find it difficult to get close to my rated 2 Mbit upload speed; on average it is probably around 1-1.5 Mbit. Of course this is partly because I can download multiple things/sources simultaneously but I am more likely to upload to only one source (unless I was running a web server). Again your usage may vary. Better upload speed is tempting but I would be more interested if the speed bump was to 5 Mbit or higher.
Now what would be a Really Big Deal would be if they could deliver better latency rather than just more bandwidth. I am not even much of an online gamer (maybe I would be if the lag to foreign servers was better), but I still notice lag simply when browsing foreign websites. I know expats are not a big consumer market but I wouldn’t be surprised if we were a major part of their FTTB user base. (None of my local friends think that paying $999 just for internet is a good deal – but compared to many American cities, it is.)

Depends on where you live, Extra-Lan offers 20/20Mbit, but it’s NT$2800 a month extra-lan.com.tw/fiber.asp?id=3
I have this service and other than about 3 or 4 hours in the evening I can always max out the connection. Newsgroups++
News clip was saying the speed is not as shown, max out at half what is supposed to.
It really depends on what you download, if the server on the other end isn’t fast enough, then you’ll never get the speed offered, that’s it.
Their point was several complaints, as to average speed tested. Dunno if it referred while downloading or just surfing, but for all the pissed off nerds, it was a cathastrophe!
Well, it could be that CHT has run out of capacity towards the rest of the internet, that would show up when you’d run speed tests.
I do get the 20Mbit/s I pay for, but it doesn’t always translate to full speed when I’m downloading single files unless the server on the other end is capable of delivering the same speed so…
I get this consistently , it drops to about 30mbit during peak hours (2 or 3 hours a day)
I’m topping out at 5.3MB/s (~43Mbps) downloading from a few premium newsgroup servers simultaneously. Each of those servers individually used to max out my 20Mbps connection so its unlikely I’m being server limited.
It’s looks like CHT doesn’t have the infrastructure to offer real-world 50M service just yet, but since the price difference between 20M and 50M is only a few NTD, I’m not going to complain that I’m only getting 2x download speeds and not the 2.5x advertised.
What about your upload speed Rik ?
Can you try, with Speedtest.net by example (Or anything else but reliable)
Regarding my connexion, I’m very satisfied about my Kbro connection. (I’m vey picky for those things, but no problem so far. But I guess it also depends on the location)

Thanks TLS for mentioning this offer. I ordered it on Monday (I was on their 10 Mbps plan before). At the time they said it would take 2 days to setup and nobody would have to come over (I figured it was just a switch on their end they had to turn on). They finally called today (Friday) and said someone would be coming over tomorrow to set it up.
For those who were on CHT before who upgraded to this plan, did someone have to come over to set it up? Just curious.
Part of the offer gives you home Wi-Fi for free, so they will be coming to swap your CPE for a D-Link modem with built in 801.11g.
That’s odd. They pointed that WIFI out to me and I told them I already had WIFI. Maybe they misunderstood.
