Afternoon with 11yr-old

Nightmare. I got talked into this despite not wanting the class. 11-yr old boy (I got rid of his younger sister) who speaks very little English. Teacher who doesn’t usually teach kids like this. And no venue.

I’m not allowing the little bugger into my house, and I’m not going to his. No time, as I’m squeezing it in between two other things. Up to now we’ve been going to the park on a weekend afternoon to practise ‘squirrel, tree, go chat up the girl’ but that’s getting old and we’ve just branched out into window shopping.

What colour is the bike? Er, yellow, no, rrrrr…, rrrrr, er, rrr… ride?

He’s pretty crap, but he’s a good kid who tries hard. I was hoping his parents would demand a more suitable teacher, and even tried to persuade them to let me introduce someone. But no, they’ve gone and paid another month in advance and I’m stuck with it.

What can I do, and where can I take this guy?

Heeeelp! Out of my depth.

Carnegie’s.
Tell him to go read all the album covers.

Take him sailing.

Take him to Taipei Public Library.
There is a library full of English picture books and fictions for kids and teenagers.
You may read him some books and encourage him to draw or make a booklet by himself.

What area of Taipei are you meeting at? Are you near the science museum or the botanical gardens or the postal museum or anything like that? Get the parents to pay the (often minimal) entrance fee.

McDonald’s. you can bring books there to teach…while you eat a ice cream cone.
