Lots has happened since the excellent discussion in this thread dating back to 2015, that is late in the Ma era.
One of the signature moves of the Tsai era (2016-2024) was to try to deal with the vast web of KMT assets which had been improperly obtained: grabbing assets of private citizens that the party state had killed, sloshing around between state and party holdings, and other common practices of the KMT. As @Mucha_Man put it above, “It would be like the Republican [Party in the US] claiming ownership of AMTRAK, or the National Parks.”
Since the KMT in Taiwan was not, for much of its history, registered as a legal entity, this meant that some of these assets were registered under the names of KMT big wigs (including former premier Hau Pei-tsun, the father of the former mayor of Taipei) or other party loyalists. When these guys died, where did the money go? That’s the subject of this new report. It’s murky af!
