Amusing TT photo blunder... or is it?

Judging by this photo of their hilarious reaction to her speech it seems even “young scientists” think Annette Lu is a joke… :roflmao:

Full TT story here

not sure who they’re laughing at, Plasmatron. could be the pre-show bellydancers. anyway, they’re Muslim students and probably not the taiwanese reps, so how would they know who she is? or does her reputation precede her across the whole world?

her comments look exactly like the standard kind of pep-talk guff that one expects from one’s “betters and elders” at a do like this.

good luck to them.

I just couldn’t help thinking the reaction of the 4 kids in the picture… 1 fast asleep, 1 holding his head in apparent agony, 1 laughing and 1 who looks for all the world like she’s throwing up in an airsick bag are an ironically accurate representation of the standard reaction of the world at large to Annette Lu opening her mouth to share her insights such as “send all aboriginal Taiwanese to South America”…

I just couldn’t believe the TT chose to run that photo, it’s almost like they’re going out of their way to make Lu look like a laughing stock…

There is no indication that the photo was taken during Lu’s speech, instead the caption reads:
Participants at the Fourth International Junior Science Olympiad are pictured during the opening ceremony yesterday at the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei.
PHOTO: LIAO CHEN-HUEI, TAIPEI TIMES
Even the screenshot above is misleading (Photoshop?) and different from the layout of the article, click the link above to see the real thing.

My guess is that they put the wrong picture in there. The students don’t look Chinese. The Times wouldn’t make such a silly mistake would they?

you’re right, there’s no emphatic evidence to prove that photo was taken at the exact moment of Lu giving her speech, however as you’ll note if you read the article, Lu’s speech was indeed during the opening ceremony, which is when this photo was taken, so there’s no proof that it wasn’t…

It’s not misleading in the slightest, nor is it photoshopped, I’m not that bored… The TT online news site also has a “headline page”, click on this link and scroll down to see where the original sceen capture came from… http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan?pubdate=2007-12-04

Seems there are more Annette Lu fans out there than I thought… the mind boggles… :astonished:

It’s because she’s a Great Lady. Show some respect for the elite of Taiwanese society, please!

I see.

If you mean to imply that I am a fan of her you are mistaken.

It isn’t:

Thanks. That makes more sense.

so you have no idea if she was speaking or not, and what she said if so. nice thread title there! really accurate description of the situation.

Just more of the Taipei Times using a photo for cheap-shot editorializing. Ma Ying-jeou, on the other side of the blue-green divide, is probably the most frequent recipient of this from that paper.

As Urodacus noted, Lu’s speech was probably just “the standard kind of pep-talk guff that one expects from one’s ‘betters and elders’ at a do like this.” Any other politician would probably have given much the same speech.

And, anyway, as Taiwan politicians go, Lu is definitely among those most likely to say/spout something interesting.

How so? There is no negative connotation to the caption of the picture or in the article itself, nor is there a confirmed link between the content of her speech and the content of the picture.

It’s a “stupid” picture for this article IMO, but this is as much fault as I can find with the report.

Stupid pictures aren’t accidents, especially when there is no “confirmed link.” Moreover, this was a photo for a speech, not something snapped quickly as a few brief gunshots rang out from the auditorium. There would have been no trouble in (1) obtaining a standard photo of Lu at the podium or whatever, or (2) simply skipping the photo altogether, as this was largely a non-event.

Imagine someone else giving a speech. Let’s say it was the president. And let’s say that a blue paper chose to accompany its story about this with a crowd shot of someone picking his nose. Would you really think no editorializing was going on?

I think it just shows childishness on the part of the Taipei Times. Sure, sometimes that can be funny; but ultimately it makes it harder to take the newspaper seriously. (And clearly the paper wants to be taken seriously. Whether it deserves to be is another matter.)

I dunno, I think they just wanted to show some of the foreign students. To picture them in a way as they did was the stupid part. IMHO.

It could just be laziness. If you look closely at some of the Yahoo photos next to articles, you will notice that many photos don’t belong with that article in a very obvious way, and you would think they just slapped on any old photo.

Thread title edited to keep the pedants from the door :unamused:

The screen caption I posted is more damning than the article itself since, as people have pointed out, the photo is ambiguously captioned in a way that could lead the reader to believe that this is the kid’s reaction to Lu’s “telling them to improve the world”…

There are a couple of possibilities:

1.) It’s just good old TT slap dash journalism, that’s the only photo they had of the event and the website’s design editor couldn’t be arsed with how it looked… Odd however since many of the headlines don’t have a photo, if all they had was this knee slapper, why run it?..

2.) Someone’s trying to make Annette look like a fool in a slightly subtle manner… Odd since the TT has more of a green slant than anything else…

3.) Nobody at TT noticed the amusing blunder… Highly likely IMO…

Regardless of what it turns out to be, in my mind at least it will continue to be the kid’s natural and immediate reaction to Annette blurting out “you young peepoo muss improo the whirl…” simply because that’s funnier… :sleepy:
