An end to Rovian politics?

One thing an Obama win might engender is an end to the Rovian and Atwaterian politics that has infested US presidential campaigns since 1988 or earlier: the politics of fear and smear, of name-calling and scandal-mongering, of hate and lies; as opposed to civil debate about the issues. The Internet appears to be rendering this shameful tactic less effective.

The Internet and the Death of Rovian Politics

what do u mean, obama used the race card all thru his campaign…his team is well versed in rovian politics

Uh…no he didn’t.

I find it hard to take anything Arianna says seriously. I know she’s smart and all that, but I just can’t not think of Green Acres.

I don’t think Rove invented Rovian politics. He is just good at it. There will always be dirty politics, it just depends on how well people can keep an eye out for it. Maybe the Internet will help. Until everyone gets tired or complacent.

I’m sick and tired of the “dig up dirt”, “invent unfounded rumors”, “guilt by association” and “throw around words like ‘socialist’ and ‘terrorist’” campaign tactics used over the last 20 years, and I’m pretty certain that most Americans feel the same way these days.

Me too. But it’s not anything new. Maybe what Arianna is saying is that we can spot it easier now. It would be nice.

I would like to see real campaign reform.

American politricks, and indeed that of many other a so-called nation, were actually far, far worse 150 years ago. The only thing that has changed are the stakes.

do you still need to kill a vampire with a wooden stake through the heart?

(I was going to say Republican, but that wouldn’t have been fair, or as funny: “Do you still need to kill a vampire with a wooden Republican through the heart?”)

Vampires are scared of Republicans. They cause a run on the blood banks…
