An Iran thread

Reminder: UN acknowledgement of an actual problem is an extremely lagging indicator.

For an oil-producing nation, they’re surprisingly bad at refining oil, and they introduced heavy subsidies in the late 90s and early 2000s that brought the price of gasoline down to about 25¢ USD per gallon.

They’ve always relied on imports to get petroleum products into the country, and ignoring unlicensed taxi drivers, who depend on cheap fuel, is sort of a jobs program at this point.

Major protests and riots have broken out every time they attempted to raise the price of gasoline. And, on top of that, they’ve been hit hard by sanctions and inflation (so, the prices are fixed in a currency that is rapidly losing value at a price before hyperinflation started).

To make things worse, the income that is supposed to pay for that (oil exports), is also crippled by sanctions. They currently sell oil at below market rates.

In 2019 they sort of turned this around. They announced that recent increases to production allowed them to catch up to demand, and stop importing fuel. However, it actually didn’t end up closing the gap, as demand increased after that. There was also a bunch of impurities in what the new facilities were producing, that ended up causing a bunch of additional pollution (in a country that already burns way too much fuel and has to deal with extended pollution).

Also to smash their evil stuff.

The covfefe just keeps coming…

Another piece of Ozymanidas’ lamentable legacy sinks into the sands of time.

By which you mean that that the U.K., France and Germany joined Russia and China in rejecting the U.S. attempt to unilaterally impose the terms of the treaty it abrogated, pointing out the absurdity of trying to enforce on others an agreement it walked out of?

He’s probably dead. It seems the helicopter is missing. Usually that means it crashed and survival rates are low in helicopter crashes.

Will mean new election in 50 days.

He is known for executing political opponents. Good riddance if he dies

Iranian state-run television is reporting that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter crash alongside foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Iranian state television has released this screen grab from video footage from inside the helicopter before it crashed.

Iran’s first president survived two helicopter crashes. I often think how Iran would have turned out had he remained in office.

The current leadership, reform or hardline, despised him, which is why current reform or hardliners are tweedledum and tweedledee.

Abolhassan Banisadr - Wikipedia

In August and September 1980, Banisadr survived two helicopter crashes near the Iran–Iraq border.[16]

On resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Raisi has been clear in his intentions, stating, “The only solution is a Palestinian state from the river to the sea.'”

Guess they couldn’t do
