Just the kind you see in books. Diamond shaped kites. All I can find are real fancy ones with wings and stuff.
Why not make it yourself? Can’t be all that difficult and lots of explanation online.
String, paper and bamboo are all you need to make a kite. I used to make a lot of kites as a youngster. A knife for cutting the bamboo helps too.
Or, to make it a little sturdier, use the plastic from a large garbage bag instead of paper.
And for those of us too lazy, can anyone actually answer the question?
Perhaps we should have a regular kite making competition at the Happy Hour tonight. I’m sure they have plenty of staws and napkins that we could use…
EDIT I just need to bring some string…
Is it illegal to fly a kite on the roof of a building?
I don’t think so, unless it’s 101. (Is now a good time to talk about my erectile dysfunction?)
It’s always a good time. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
Most definitely not!
Can someone please answer Richardmm’s original question. They’re starting to make me nervous.

You should be able to find all sorts of kites – including relatively plain ones – at the Taipei County Kite Festival, which has already begun.
I went a few years ago and got to see some wonderful stunt-kite flying on the beach at Shimen. It was a nice way to spend a few hours.

A level or two above what Richardm is looking for is a standard, run-of-the-mill, delta-wing stunt kite such as the one in the link below. Uses two strings on separate handles. Can those be purchased at the festival? For prices that might be normal in Western countries?

Where is Shimen? I went to the festival site and either it’s too early in the morning for my brain or it really didn’t say where it was . . . and I can’t find my map . . . sigh.
In college I spent a good few weeks of one spring quarter trying to construct kites with some friends. We were using butcher paper so they were really too heavy but we got a few good flights out of them. And more than a few good crashes.
Could someone post the kite festival info in English? They use Macromedia Flash for the main body of the page, which I can’t get running on Knoppix, and the “English” site version doesn’t list simple things like dates, locations, event schedules, and so on in any comprehendable form. Clicking on “directions and map” brings up nothing but Chinese text even in the “English” section.
Ideally, maybe something like “get on the MRT, get off at Danshui station, take bus number NNN twelve stops (typically thirty-five minutes) to XXXXXX, get out and you’re there. It’s open all day Sunday. . . .”?
I bought a kite recently at a bookstore in Tianmu zhongshan north road. It is a cheap little thing triangle. I kind of regret not getting a big fancy one at costco.
this weeks 9/24-25 kite fest in wanli 臺北縣萬里鄉翡翠灣 is supposed to be the best. it will be an international affair with 14 countries (including the us). there will be fire kites and fireworks at night.
They will also be passing out 100 free kites.
