“My libertarian friends are probably getting a little upset now but I think that’s because they never appreciate the benefits of local fascism.”—MSNBC, Feb. 8, 1997
Bullshit… merely low-brow entertainment for rabid partisans and their opponents on the left. Coulter ain’t nobody worth paying attention to… it’s political satire.
She’s all of those things! She’s the new face of conservativism – bold, insulting, bigoted and accepted by the Republican mainstream.
Democrats read books by Al Franken, an SNL writer who used 14 Harvard students to research a very funny book that is unassailable on its facts. Republicans have somehow made Coulter a bestselling author, which is natural because they’re also the guys who listen to G. Gordon Liddy tell folks how best to shoot federal agents and to Hal Turner recommend the killing of federal judges. To this day, Coulter still somehow thinks the only thing wrong with the Oklahoma City bombing is that McVeigh didn’t continue his rampage in New York.
No, the conservatives on Forumosa spend too much time watching Michael Moore.
Salvatore, she is a joke, but not to many people. She has a syndicated column and recently introduced the presidential candidates at a rally in Washington, which is where the faggot remark comes from. She is at least as representative of conservatives as Moore is of liberals.
Everyone loves to bash Moore and use him to discredit liberals (when many of us despise him too) but everytime Coulter or Rush or Hannity are mentioned we get the usual denials that they don’t represent anyone despite having huge followings. Or we get the classic “But I never listen or read them and know nothing about them.”
My guess is Ann Coulter represents the dominatrix faction, whose natural home, if you think about it, would have to be in the present Republicon Party.
Reasonable people on both sides need to recognize that there are large numbers of idiots in both camps. And I think most reasonably people do recognize this (as you and others rightly point out – Moore and Coulter both have huge consituencies).
So I agree with you that denying that they don’t represent anyone is silly.
But I don’t see what’s wrong with your “classic ‘But I never listen or read them…’” response. It’s often the truth.
I also don’t think it’s the case that conservatives are more likely to use a Michael Moore to bash liberals with the straw-club than liberals are to do the same with someone like Coulter. I it happening each way in about equal numbers. (I’ve never done a count – that’s just my impression.)
The difference between Moore and Coulter is that Moore is outraged while Coulter is merely outrageous. Moore, to his credit, can be hilarious and is not particularly mean-spirited in any of the stunts he pulls – and most of the arguments leveled against him focus on his weight and clothing. Coulter appears to exist on bile and hatred, and I guess that’s what sells in the GOP mainstream these days.
Agreed, but only during private, unscripted, incoherent paroxysms of rage and paranoid conspiracy delusions… so what. Who but these people could say these things with a straight face and without a trace of irony. Introducing candidates and getting fired from commentator jobs is all she’s good for. She’s only working at all because she’s mastered the two minute soundbite assasination. Moore will soon get his with that new documentary about him. Entertainment parading as journalism… harumph!
No kidding. Geez, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
I don’t hold conservative writers/commentators up to a higher standard than liberal ones. I don’t read the daily Kos, and I don’t read Coutler. So what?
Honestly, aside from LGF, Powerline and Cobb, I don’t read any conservative or liberal sources regularly. I read the news, mostly the liberal news at that, and I kind of make up my mind on my own.
Liberals, though they don’t like to admit it, even to themselves, like punishment. I suspect that’s one reason why they’re so upset with the Republicon Party. They miss the good old days when the Republicans spent all their time and energy punishing Democrats instead of off disciplining faceless, nameless people half way around the world.

The difference is that conservatives continue to play coy. They refuse to admit their party has a problem with xenophobia and homophobia as represented by people like Coulter. Hell, some even refuse to admit that fundamentalist Christains have any power in the party (not all the power, but even any). No liberal won’t admit that Moore represents a lot of liberal thinking, even if they persoanlly despise him.
I’m surprised Hobbes you don’t see a problem with the hypocrisy of complaining of the fleck in liberal’s eyes, while ignoring the log in one’s own. (And I use the Biblical metaphor to show that this kind of double standard and hypocrisy, this kind of being unaware of what is happening in your own home as you bash others, has long been considered wrong and harmful.)
JD, it is not a case of damned if you do or don’t. I despise Moore and have been forthright about it as have other liberals on Forumosa. Does this damn me as a liberal? Of course not.
You say you don’t really follow these people. Fair enough, but we have a list of quotes above. So I ask you outright: praise or damn Coulter for the quotes at the start of this thread. Same with you JAS.
