About 15 scooter guys were standing by the side of the road and one guy with heavy riding gear was lying in the road moving a little…his scooter was in pieces all over the place, and a big truck was standing in the road…right on a bend.
driving back the road was full of ghost money…from pinglin all the way to the wulai turnoff…

A few years ago I came around the corner on that road and there was a car upside down on the road, nobody else around and I assume the driver standing by the side of the road, still don’t know how he did it. The trucks on those roads coming in from Ilan drive like demons.
do you mean road number 9? because you speak about a bunch of crazy scooter riders and it seems to me that you meant the road going to Yilan… which I also love
Indeed, I took it last Friday, pas the night at Yilan and returned on Saturday morning. What I saw when I was coming back scared me; I mean , I´m used to take this road on saturdays, but a bit later. This time it was about 8:30 AM and man, the road was plagued with stupid assholes racing as if they were escaping from death… when they´re doing just the contrary thing.
I make that road at an average speed of 60 / 70 km/h (hard to say) on a crappy Wolf 125cc, and I consider it dangerous (I´m quitting, I promise), but some people in there were taking some of the curves really fast…
Last week on Sunday I was coming back from Yilan by number 9, chasing a 4X4, when I saw two guys on scooter taking a curve; one of them took it right, but the other one KEPT going right… and almost killed himself against the big car.
Sometimes I feel these guys just vaporize themselves against a truck, and stop putting others´lifes at risk.
(Bonus: I bought a TU250cc one month ago. One hour later, one car almost killed me when I was going on the way to Linkou. In the middle of two curves, the stupid cunt was overtaking 2 or 3 cars at once where a clearly marked yellow double line… I was really lucky that even though I was kind of fast, I could react and only the rear part of the car touched my new motorbike and I slide with the motorbike for more than 10 m and jumped over it… without almost any consequence… almost a miracle!)
(Bonus II: the cunt thought it was a KTR so 10k could cover the repairment. He ended up paying 49k xDDDDDD + 6k)
I´m sure you´re right and I woulnd´t be the first doing so, but the thing is that I was on my lane, ridding in the middle of it, when the guy appears in front of me… no matter the double yellow line and the fact that he was in the middle of two curves… what I mean is that the +100cc is not so much to do with the accident. Yeah, the more cc the higher speed you can reach, but you can ride at 50 kmh and be t-boned or rear bumped by an asshole… if you know what I mean.

That’s the crazy here - you have to factor all this stuff in. Round that bend there may be a guy coming towards you in the wrong lane, so are you going slow enough to be able to take evasive action? Stuff you wouldn’t even factor in, back in the States or whereever, because the chance of encountering such insane driving is so small.
I never go faster than 60. my friend died near New Garden City…in his lane…a taxi overtook a cement truck.The taxi crossed a double line etc, but it still took over a year to sort everything out. His girlfriend had to go to court so many times…they tried to blame it on the fact that he was a foreigner:(

He tried to convince me that it was all my fault. I was ridding too fast!!! Yeah, the fact that he was on MY lane and that there was a double yellow line was not important. He called some guys who I thought were the truck guys, and they asked me for the papers. They laughed when they saw that the motorbike was tranferred to me that day. They were actually his coworkers. They and the cunt also tried to make fun on the accident and so and blame on me when the cops arrived. I almost killed them…
For me it was a bit different… the bigger the bike the safer i was… i had 5 accidents on a 125cc scooter and never my fault, actually on several scooters, but all of them 125cc… then i went to a hornet 250cc and no accidents for 1 year, then 1000cc and no accidents for 2 years, and finally ninja 636 and no accidents for 2 years…
I ride hard but safe… my conclusion is, no more scooters for city drive, i have a car now… and if i want to be in 2 wheels then a 1000cc or 600cc is the way to go… the extra power always got me out of trouble where a smaller scooter would have made me crash…
not saying it works for everyone, just for me…

It is funny you posted this. My director at my high school knows I am a huge motorcycle nut and knows that I sometimes ride that highway. Anyway he drove to Ilan last weekend and he told me about all the ghost money on the . He said that every now and then many of the truck drivers that take that route daily drive it and throw out ghost money to protect themselves from motorcyclists. Recently there have been a lot of accidents out there and the truck drivers are superstitious, so instead of slowing down they think throwing ghost money for 30 kilometers is the answer.
I rode “bei yi” a few months ago and man that road is getting so F$cking dangerous now. There are so many bikes, cars, trucks, scooters, and cyclists too. Screw riding fast on that road.
You guys mostly speaking of the northern sections? i love route 9, bt onyl drive southern part cutting across from west to east on scooter.
No matter who is at fault dead is dead. lines mean nothing here, i thought most people knew better than that. any mountain road people should be using lights and horns on fast curves, especially areas of no lanes or single lanes. probably anyone who has driven anywhere in Taiwan for more than 1 day has almost died at least once. its not back home, we should face it and prepare for it. drive accordingly i prefer looking like a twat than looking like a corpse.
Last night I thought I’d go for a little drive (which I almost never do) around Danshui and find somewhere different to eat. Never a-f’ing-gain. Hordes of mouthbreathing students on scooters, throttle wide open and brain in shutdown mode, slaloming around the roads; and these are supposedly the creme-de-la-creme of Taiwan, the brightest and best, our academic and social future. The only way to stay safe in a country which does not understand the concept of “dangerous machinery” is to stay of the blighted sodding roads.
I wont ride a two wheeler in taiwan again ever. Because there are just too many idiots like this guy. Riding on the other side of the road. The other guys are lucky not to be killed by this idiot.
Was looking for another clip of a pair on a scooter rounding a bend on the beiyi and slid into a truck. Apparently they lived, although banged up. Couldnt find it yet.
Funny how the person who filmed this just drove off…typical Taiwan style, but that footage could help one of the involved parties show who is at fault.
BUT…this is Taiwan, and if you try to help you get sued or blamed for something …awesome.
B9, for a road with ZERO traffic, no landslides, and great views, from Pinglin take Pingshuang Rd … it goes under the Big and Noisy 5 to the NE. I especially like stopping by a small bridge over a creek after crossing the mtn range.
thank you! Will check it out. Unfortunately for me, what makes me LOVE this road is the fact that there are so many scooters and bikes on it. I am a bit obsessed, especially with hearing the bike behind me and guessing what it is.
I was there the day the two guys slid under the truck!!! I also wanted to stop and at least go and sit with the guy who was hit last week, but even his friends wouldn’t go near him. If he turns his head to talk to me the driver can blame some injury on me. I HATE that:(
