Anyone had to cancel a China visa before applying for TBZ (taibaozheng)?

Recently got Taiwan dual citizenship and was planning to apply for a TBZ, but the visa center in Taiwan told me my China visa in my U.S. passport is still active and needs to be canceled at the China embassy first.

Has anyone dealt with this before? What was the process like? Planning to use the TBZ moving forward if I need to stay in China for more than 180 days.

Would appreciate any help.

What visa centre?

How would this place know you have a US passport and Chinese visa in the first place?

The place was called 宏欣台灣澳中旅- in Taipei, one of the many spots to apply for the TBZ. When I filled out my application before heading there, it had special instructions for U.S.-Taiwan dual citizens. I believe the site was ** redstar.com.tw**—one of those visa centers.

They must have taken a photocopy of my U.S. passport page with the visa because I handed it over temporarily. Does anyone know a better place to apply for the TBZ?

Not sure why I ran into this issue—seems like others don’t.

They also mentioned that people can get caught if they still have the China visa in their U.S. passport after getting the TBZ without canceling it. True or not? I found all of this strange…

The Travel Agency.

How do they know you are a US citizen if you don’t tell them?

So you just willingly provided this information to them?

Don’t ask don’t tell.

I believe they haven’t sent the info to CTS yet, so I might still have a chance to go with another travel agency in Taiwan. Do you suggest any good ones?

Next time, would it make sense to just not mention I’m a U.S. citizen? Asking because my place of birth is listed as the U.S. on my Shēnfènzhèng (身份证). Of course, being born in the U.S. doesn’t automatically mean someone is a U.S. citizen, but I’m not sure if that would raise any doubts when applying. Curious if anyone else has dealt with this.

Also, do you think I should take steps to cancel my China visa at the China embassy, or just forgo that part?

Then let them ask if it is an issue.

Don’t volunteer.

Taiwan 1.0.1.

what is the typical way to apply for the TBZ?

Is it normal for dual citizens applying for TBZ to just decline any questions about dual citizenship and proceed with the application?

The travel agency even lists a higher application fee if you’re a dual citizen, which makes me wonder—does being a dual citizen actually impact the application, or is it just about declining to give more info like you said? Feels like a gray area.

How many travel agencies have you asked, btw?
I did look thru websites, one of whom ask for our foreign passports, others which don’t, but do need the nwohr passport/settlement permit and HHR copy.

Haven’t had any opportunity to ask myself yet.
