I’m about to retire within the next year and we are seriously considering living at least half the time in Taiwan. Has anyone here retired in Taiwan? What do you do with your time here?
Our initial plan is to do some traveling within Asia using Taiwan as a base. After that, I’m not really sure what we’ll do on a daily basis. We are contemplating volunteering or maybe even working part time at something enjoyable.
Type “Retire in Taiwan” in the search function on this site (the magnifying glass).
There are at least 5 big threads already.
Notwithstanding that, most retirees have so.ething to do that takes up their time. Gardening, cycling, online learning, learning Chinese, and much more.
My wife was born in Taiwan but moved to the US as a teen. We’ve been back to Taiwan a number of times over the years and for us it feels like our second home.
I may actually take mandarin classes as I can’t read or write Chinese and my speaking ability is very basic. I guess my original question could have been more general as to what others did after retirement. I’d like to know how other foreigners spend their retirement days in Taiwan.
We are both retirees, a native and a foreigner and have been for 5 years. We spend 6m here & 6 months my birth place. We both pursue different hobbies, she does daily line dancing, I cycle or hike. Together we see friends or travel around Taiwan and nearby Asian countries.
Remember the third age is for relaxing and enjoying, you don’t have to be busy every day. Sit and take a coffee, watch the world go by, one task a day is my philosophy.
Thanks. We need to adopt your healthy mindset. I feel like the transition into retirement might take a bit of an adjustment for us. It’s like a 180° difference. For so many years we just kept grinding it out at work and saving and now we have to do an about-face and start spending and relaxing. Still, in the end, it’s a good problem to have. I’m sure we’ll figure it out.
I’m semi-retired. Work in entertainment occasionally. DIY my rooftop. Take Chinese classes. Run my still to make some moonshine. Grow plants and mushrooms. Catch up with friends over a few beers or some whiskey. Hang in a coffee shop with my newspaper or a book. Go out for a steak or a burger. Plenty of things to do every day.
I’ve got 4 more years to go, but I plan on doing more leisurely huandaos around Taiwan, bike riding, playing RPGs, geocaching, mahjong, getting back into calligraphy or playing the piano, and reading a good book in a café any time I feel like it. I can’t wait!
If you are really bored I can find all sorts of physically appealing activities on my land for you to do. I will not charge you for the chance to enjoy those activities and will even throw a few free beers your way to make your time more enjoyable. Most of those activities can be done even during a heavy rainstorm so don’t worry about hitting a good weather day.
Maybe I should add that during the last 9 years I have not yet found anyone to take me up on this truly great offer.
