Anyone know what is going on with Kaohsiung American School (KAS)?

So, as I am job hunting, I noticed an awful lot of job postings at KAS. Has anyone heard what is going on with what looks like a major overhaul before I apply to what looks like a possible red-flag situation?

Oof all three schools hiring for the principal at same time .

Right? Just trying to figure out if this staffing reset is for the better or worse. That is why I was curious if anyone heard anything about it.

I can’t tell you if there is anything in particular going on there, but KAS generally has a good reputation and is one of the new proper international schools on the island. could be a coincidence or maybe they’re clearing house.

I’ve been told by someone in the teaching business that performance results have been poor.

A further assumption is that the board being unsatisfied with attempts to correct this,…..has opted for a purge and reset.

I also recall a post here on TAS with many parents pulling kids out because of all the DEI, CRT and wokeism stuff. Maybe that’s all ending?

How much is the fee again per year :laughing:.

I’d need further evidence of that than that one MAGA poster here that thinks discussions centered on the environment is ā€œwoke.ā€

Too woke and or union organizing were the first two that came to my mind.

It is quite something for all three to get the boot at the same time. What do you think could be a more likely explanation?

Not woke enough?

Incompetence or just not up to snuff. Parents are paying like 30,000 USD (!!) a year. Teachers can’t be slumming like they’re at a buxiban chain. Anyway, I’d think that’s the most likely scenario. I’m not ruling out a revolt against wokeness, but haven’t seen evidence of that except one post here iirc.

It’s ā€˜non-profit’, but most likely not enough non-profit surplus is being made? Their focus on DEIJ might have impacted that surplus, perhaps. It does seem odd for all three of them to be replaced.

If the board hired 3 incompetent principals, that suggests the main source of incompetence is the board! Which I guess is possible.

I do know faculties of education in the US are pumping out social justice warriors, but those dogmas won’t translate well to Taiwan.

 Hmm, well, for now, they still hold a good reputation. Meh, I’ll throw my hat in the ring and see if they come back with an offer. In this market, what do I have to lose?

Oh, I thought they were just cleaning house of teachers. If it’s principals then maybe @TT is right that there’s some administrative overhaul happening.

Well, it is a mixture. Yes, all 3 principals, and like 10+ new teacher postings for various things have been posted in the past 48 hours.

Definitely agree with TT that it looks like more of the board, either by forcing or causing, the ripple effect.

So who else would fire all the principles d’ya think ?. And who hired them in the first place ? :grimacing:
Stellar management with all those fees going into it. Looks great.

Par for the course here. Remember the great TES fiasco a few years ago?

I hate to defend teachers in Taiwan but these local boards need to sniff the stench of global reality. A teacher with a posh degree, teaching experience etc. being lectured by a local hayseed board? I’d tell the local board to bite my choda! They’ll clean house then hire cheap! And then wonder where it all went wrong.

Yeah, I have also heard some people talking about how TAS enrollment is down. It made me wonder why, and one of my first thoughts was the woke stuff. Definitely a lot of woke folk working at the school, and it just took time for all that stuff to bubble up. I’m not surprised that most of the parents are rejecting it, and good for them!

One person I met who worked for an organization affiliated with TAS was telling me about the enrollment decrease, but didn’t mention any specific reason. They are now having open house events, which they have never needed to do before and also some real social media campaigns to attract students, which they also have pretty much never done before. Plus there are of course more ā€œinternational schoolsā€ than ever nowadays (most of them are fake, but there are some that are legit, or at least seem very legit) so just an increase in competition. My thoughts on these places was that their greatest weakness is that they are (for the most part) Taiwanese owned and managed, but if TAS is going whole hog on the woke stuff, then this ironically becomes a real strength.

In a more general sense, the school has struggled to find good, long term top level leadership ever since Dr. Hennessey left like 5-6 years ago.

As I recall, they labeled it as ā€œJEDI.ā€
