Anyone start a business in Taiwan in 2024? Hurdles?

As a US-Taiwan dual citizen, I’m curious about your experiences.

What were the initial hurdles you faced setting up your business in Taiwan?

How does the taxation structure compare to what you experienced as a US citizen / foreign citizen

Any challenges with hiring and building your team here?

Love to hear stories

Language has been the biggest hurdle for me. Taiwanese work culture is pretty wild and finding people to work for you can be difficult. Anyone you contract out will try to extract as much money from you as they can while delivering the absolute minimum. If you don’t have a prior relationship with these people you will be taken advantage of. The laws are vague and if you ask for clarification you might get different answers. Are you considering something in particular?

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m pretty much seeing if I should stay in the US and run my business (an Etsy shop for homemade items) or try going to Taiwan. My Mandarin is not good, but I won’t be needing to hire at the moment.

Your experience is going to be wildly different to most of us.

We have to get MOEA approval. Visa paperwork. Work permits. etc…

And then you’re a US citizen with the crazy tax laws.

What are the benefits of moving your business? If you mail your items from Taiwan to the US it will be more expensive.
