Apocalyptic solar events 2022 onwards

I’ve been seeing lots of aurora pictures today: on Bluesky and also from family in Saskatchewan.

Phone cameras do make this a bit harder to judge, since they seem to often show colors that the naked eye may not actually make out.

No prediction of communications problems, just a light show

Pics from Ireland last night.
Strongest solar storm in 20 years.

Never seen them my whole life .

(Interestingly Ireland is at the same latitude as parts of Canada, quite far North but doesn’t freeze because of the Gulf stream)

My sister shot this in Leipzig, Germany.

That’s way south from Ireland.

I’ve seen them but never like that!

Also interestingly, 80% of the people in the UK live further north than 80% of the people in Canada.

Repeating myself from upthread: remember the pictures are to some extent fake–or at least, the smartphone sensors pick up on colours that we don’t see ourselves. So the people taking these pictures usually didn’t see the aurora like that either.

I’m still envious of the people who have seen all the northern lights shows of late! Do they look as impressive in real life as in the photos, nope, but I’m sure they still look fantastic.

I’ve only seen flashes of green in the distance, almost like lightning

I’ll ask my relatives how clear was it,, fyi this is very unusual for Ireland. Most people had never seen the northern lights until last year. My grandmother told me about seeing the northern lights in the South of the country a couple of times but I wasn’t sure if she really saw them when she said it lol. I believe her now.

There was a similar event back in the 19th century IIRC. Actually no that event was much bigger. The aurora was even observed in the tropics.

Yup, same: in Vancouver, no less!

And I still feel appallingly stupid for my excitement about seeing the northern lights when I went to Alaska decades ago. In summer. Oops. Still a great trip, and the northern lights weren’t a goal of the trip, but the penny dropped when I was in that tent somewhere in the panhandle at 11pm in daylight and thinking “Oh yeah …”
