I’m curious about Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. My phone was purchased here and activated using my Apple ID based in the US. It uses the App Store just fine, even if I don’t use a VPN to make it think it’s in the US. I’ve never had a problem using the iPhone this way.
Lately I’ve been thinking about using Apple Pay due to security. Have been noticing certain convenience stores in iffy areas don’t give you the receipt or item printout, just telling you you can go. These stores can come and go and I’ve been thinking I shouldn’t be handing my physical credit card to scanning it on their things if disputes arise down the line and the consumer protection here can be lacking with certain businesses. If I can use Apple Pay, which doesn’t give out your credit card info to the stores, that would be one les thing to worry about.
The question is if I load a local credit card in my Apple Wallet, will it cause Apple to regard it as a foreign transaction, even if I use it at Ah Huang’s “orange store” here? If I load a US based credit card and use it here I don’t see how it wouldn’t consider anything here an overseas purchase.
Curious if anyone here has experience with this.
I don’t understand exactly what you’re asking. But let me try. You have certain things messed up.
A local transaction is defined by your bank. it has nothing to do with Apple. If the POS location is within the country, and the payment is with local currency, it’ll be treated by the bank as a local transaction. The device manufacturer or payment networks like Visa don’t decide that.
So any payment within Taiwan using TWD will be regarded as local for Taiwan banks.
A US based card has policies decided by US banks. It doesn’t matter if you added it to your iphone here, and use it here. Transactions abroad will be treated as foreign transactions by your US banks (unless they have some special deals, at some time, for certain countries).
Disputes are handled by your bank. Card-based consumer protection has nothing to do with the business. Its a privilege offered to you by your bank based on their terms and conditions.
Lastly, yes Apple pay doesn’t give out your “original” credit card number to the stores. But it does tokenize it, create a virtual account number, and give that out to the stores. You can even check the number under the card details in your apple pay wallet.
So it seems the relationship that matters here is between the bank that issued the credit card and the retailer. Is that right?
I was worried the iPhone using a US based account would have a problem with me loading a local credit card in its Wallet.
Assuming you have an iPhone using a local SIM card with a US (or another country that isn’t Taiwan) based Apple ID, are you able to use the Apple Wallet with a local credit card for purchases at local retailers?
Half-answering this: my iPhone uses a Canadian Apple ID and a local Taiwanese SIM. I’ve got both Taiwanese and Canadian credit cards set up in Apple Pay. No issues with both of them in there. I frequently use Apple Pay and my Taiwanese credit card in Canada (CTBC card has 2.8% LINE-points-back for international transactions in an actual shop).
Using my Taiwanese credit card (via Apple Pay) when I’m in Canada is absolutely counted as a foreign transaction.
However, I’m not sure if I’ve ever used Apple Pay here in Taiwan! I think once or twice, long ago, just to see if I could. Most of the time I use LINE pay here now. An occasional store will take credit cards, but not LINE; I’m guessing there are very few stores that don’t accept LINE, but do accept Apple Pay, which is probably why I never use Apple Pay here.
Thank you! This answers my question.
I’m starting to see places here that accept Apple Pay, and maybe it gives some peace of mind using that instead of just handing my credit hard over.
It may just be easier to pick up a second iPhone and have it entirely based in Taiwan for use here.
