APRC to nationality
Two things that I forgot to mention are (1) Your police clearance from your home country also needs to go to MOFA in Taipei to certify that the TECO signature is real. (2) Your NT$200 fee needs to be in the form of a postal order, made out to the Ministry of the Interior.
Wow. That’s such a pain in the butt! However, remember, APRC holders who are also married do not need to submit a federal criminal background check from their home country when they apply for naturalization. Same thing for JFRV ARC holders who are applying for naturalization, too.

Good job A-ha. Now, the wait. Once you get your paperwork back approved, you will receive a certificate which gives you 2 years to renounce your current citizenship and complete the process.

Yes well, I’m ball-and-chainless so I get fewer perks than the married lot.

That is true also!

OK, so I got a note in the post today, telling me to bring my chop and APRC to the HHR office to come and pick up my Candidature Certificate! I think I’ll be there tomorrow morning 1st thing!

Any way, so this serves to prove that that story about having to wait for 2 years after acquiring an APRC before applying for citizenship is pure bullshit. :cactus:

Congrats. :bravo: Now, the tedious act of renouncing your citizenship. I forgot what country you’re originally from. Is it going to be relatively easy for you to renounce, or is it going to be a major nightmare like poor Bismarck?

Thanks mate! I’m hoping not as big a nightmare as Bismarck’s! He seems to have lots of bad luck when dealing with the South African government. I’m also South African, but I’ve been getting my documents without too much trouble. touch wood Let’s hope and  the next step isn’t going to be a nightmare!

Most appreciative in having a rumour displelled in a most compelling and figurative manner. :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, congrats, I am green with envy. Best of luck with the next steps!

The pleasure is all mine, Icon!

So I went very early this morning to go and pick up my Certificate of Candidature; a quick 2 minutes in-and-out. Now comes the HUGE mountain (if you’re a South African)… :unamused:

I went to Taipei this morning to renounce my South African citizenship. Now the long wait starts. I see the High Commissioners’ websites for the UK and Oz states that the process takes between 6 and 10 months. I’m not holding my breath…don’t worry.

3. Upon becoming a Taiwan national, you will be given the TARC and this is the temporary status you will maintain for a minimum of 1 year. You must not leave Taiwan during this 1 year “prison sentence” or the clock gets reset and you have to wait another year from the time you return.

Could you please answer me some questions?

  • In this 1 year we can not leave Taiwan for 1 or 2 weeks? (ex. Chinese New Year,…)
  • Is it necessary or better to go from APRC to Citizen?
    Thanks in advance

AFAIK:

  1. No. It resets the clock.

  2. Not necessary nor advantageous. If you have done the time and rest of requirements and are willing and able, the sooner the better.

Am I right in understanding that applicants for naturalization who are married to ROC citizens are excused from the medical, police, AND language tests? Would this apply to APRC and JFRV holders alike (assuming the APRC holder is married to a local)?

Also, at some point the applicant will transition from a passport in their “foreign” (and presumably roman-letter) name, to an ROC passport with the name rendered in Chinese characters. Of course there will also be a romanized version, but would that be your original name, a pinyinized version of the Chinese name, or whatever foolishness you dare to submit to them (as long as it is in roman letters)? Also, i realize that everyone doing this will already have a Chinese-character name on their documents, but would you have to use the same one, or could you make up a new one?
