Are Canada bound flights still not permit to drop off checked baggage at Taipei Main Station?

I am not in Taiwan this summer… any update?

A few month ago,I spoke with the staff there after I saw the sign and confirmed the situation: Canada is apparently the only country whose travellers are specifically not permitted to check in or drop off checked baggage at Taipei Main Station. I had to haul my checked suitcase onto the Airport MRT and take it all the way to Taoyuan Airport.

I wrote to my MP, CC to Transport Canada regarding this ..

They wrote back to me with this response. My understanding is that there is still no resolution to the issue. As far as I can tell, Canada remains the only country for which passengers are not permitted to complete in-town check-in and drop off their checked baggage at Taipei Main Station. Passengers travelling to Canada still have to take their checked luggage all the way to Taoyuan Airport.

I was so curious about the reason that I fired off an email right from Taoyuan Airport before my flight back home. What makes it particularly interesting is that both Mainland China and the United States permit this arrangement.

This will likely be resolved when Canada joins the Union.

off topic ..

Some people in Canada seem to think that joining the EU would somehow solve many of Canada’s trade problems and reduce our dependence on the United States, but that’s a fantasy. Countries like Canada and Mexico are, geographically and economically, within America’s sphere of influence. The EU has its own interests to protect, and it is unlikely to cross the Yankees for Canada’s sake.
