Astropolitics - the next frontier

As we speak the United States has sent Artemis 2 to circle the moon with the intent to eventually set up a base there.

With the newer Geneva accords the US would be in a position to claim territory on the moon and set up a base there.

We are also seeing anti-satellite equipment and amazing results from satellites to where smaller countries like Ukraine can take on bigger opponents.

We are also seeing a resource grab to create the technology to secure space.

Will we see an international body applying there or is it the new Wild West?

Or will we go from a world where Britannia ruled the waves to the next power ruled the stars…

Not claim.

Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.

The Artemis Accords (which had 61 signatory nations as of January 2026) were designed to provide a modern framework for lunar exploration. They reinforce the ban on claiming territory but introduce the concept of Safety Zones.

I have a feeling this is going to be circumvented by the likes of corporate entities. Fines would just become part of the cost of doing business, but the financial profits for the companies that gamble and win would be astronomical (pun intended).
