That’s just horrifying.

Very sad. Condolences.

Probably revenge for killing off his favorite character. Some people take that stuff way too seriously.

There are people claiming that there’s a preschool/daycare center inside the studio. :noway:

So sad. Most animators don’t make that much money to begin with, and endures long work hours. They have absolutely no say in the story. The arson is very delusional.

24 dead have been confirmed. That’s approximately 20% of all the employees. It’s insane.

Awful. Reminds me of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in that it’s a targeted attack on employees of a particular content-producing company.

Not saying they deserved it, but Charlie hebdo was also very controversial and were mocking muslims by portraying a cartoon of Mohammed.

KyoAni is none of that - they make feel-good, happy movies and shows. This is like someone going after Pixar.

A shame and a tragedy.

20 confirmed, nearly 10 others presumed dead.

just goes to show, it just takes 1 whacko to fuqq up any “safe”, livable country

Like Taiwan, Japan needs a lot of work to de stigmatize mental health issues and improve care for those who are mentally ill. While overall crime is low, there are a fair number of mass stabbing attacks by disturbed individuals, including one just a month or two ago at a bus stop full of elementary school kids. Also, a number of arson and mass poisoning incidents.

33 dead as final toll. Horrible. Horrific. Very tragic.

Plus a lot of unique original film data/films/ destroyed. It is a terrible artistic loss, too.

truly sad and sickening.
the building must’ve just lit up so quickly that it made it difficult for any quick escape

It’s very upsetting. Profound loss of life, plus immense cultural loss. Hope the arsonist gets the death penalty.

I think it must have had carpet, to light up and prevent scape and knock everyone unconscious.

That is something I hate from our building. We have this deadly in a fire plastic floors, plenty of combustible papers, books and electronics, stryrofoam roof … and one escape stairway/door for 2000 people. That is a modern addition. Yet the Japanese era structure has proper ceramic tile floors… covered by friggin thick red carpet. Ayayayayyy
