I noticed there are many Italian ice cream shops opening up all over Taiwan! I personally have tried every shop in Taipei and Taichung. The best one is located behing the Old Red Floor Theater in Shimen Ding. This old historic theater is right across from exit 1 Ximen mrt. Just walk to the back of the theater and there is a shop there called Primo Gelato Cheng Du Road, Lane 10, No. 57. The ice cream is made fresh daily! Their scoops are huge!! About 6-7oz. per scoop. Every other shop sells 3-4 oz per scoop. This guys shop is cool!! All the machines and flavors are Italian. Another shop is located in Shuang Cheng Jie Lane 49. Its called Poko’s. Their ice cream is good too but not as good as Primo’s. They will be selling beer and franks for winter I heard.
yes, my friend and I have been that place, their ice cream is very good, , we sat outside table and enjoyed the environment and the candle lit table setting, Very romantic!
And store any leftovers in your Italian man-purses.
Seriously, I’ll need to get up to the wilds of Tienmu soon – a total pig-out at Cafe Raja followed by stagger to Pfeffersack’s for a nice sorbet digestif sounds like a fine way to spend a Sunday lunchtime.
well I did get to Primo’s in Hsimenting and questionable marketing practices aside I recommend it. nice big scoop for $40, i will be returning when in the neighborhood. i preferred the chocolate and cream type flavors, found the fruit ones a bit bitter.
finally getting around to posting after getting to Tutti frutti last week. great too, rich and sweet, very much like gelato i’ve had at italian run shops before, compares very well with the haagen dazs i’m sure they’ll be stripping business from in no time. will be back with the kids
I went there by accident today after lunch. The proprietor’s name is Tony who seemed like a very pleasant guy. Huge scoops. Had the Tiramisu and Green Tea flavors. Tiramisu was very good.
The other place that was very decent HK style rice dishes (serves chicken, roast duck, roast pork, cha siu pork all over rice) at the corner from Primo’s Gelato.
I believe this little area is now called New Ximen Market. Today they had a lot of tea vendors hawking their teas in the open courtyard.
Not that there’s a great chance of reviving a thread dormant now for 10 full years (!) but in gelato we must trust, and good, authentic-style gelato…matters. What do others know about the layout of gelato points around Taipei? Would be very curious…
No heavily-adjusted-to-local-tastes recommendations though please.
