Baby products in Taiwan

Hello, I will be going to Taiwan in a few days, and I’m trying to pack light. I figure I can buy anything when I get there.
I will be bringing my 6 month old baby, so he’ll be starting solids in TW.

I am wondering if there are these baby products in Taiwan, and where can I buy them?

liquid vitamin D (do the doctors recommend this? or is plain sunlight ok?)
rice cereal (or is congee given instead?)
ready made jar baby food (or make my own?)
diapers size 3 and 4 (what brand is good… or does it matter?)
baby shampoo (what brand is good?)

thanks in advance!

Liquid Vitamin D - I’m not sure. I ordered mine from iherb and had it shipped here, so I never looked in the baby stores for it. But I believe it’s no longer needed once the baby starts solids…I stopped giving them to my daughter at six months.

Rice cereal - Yeah you can find this at pretty much any grocery store. At the specialty grocery stores, like Jason’s and City Super, they have Organix brand, if you’re looking for organic.

Ready made baby food - Not much available. They have some at all the grocery stores, but there are only a few flavors. I’ve seen apple and chicken; that’s about it. You’d be better off making your own with a steamer and blender (assuming you are moving here and not coming for just a vacation).

Diapers - Tons available. Lots of Japanese brands (Merries, Mamy Poko, etc.), as well as Pampers. Costco sells big boxes of pampers for cheap. I usually buy my from PCHome and have them delivered.

Baby Shampoo - I like Mustela for my little one. They make a 2 in 1 shampoo and body wash. I’ve seen it in several pharmacies, or you can order it online. Costco has Honest Company shampoo sometimes, too.

Let me know if you need help finding anything when you get here!

Thanks for your quick reply! I’ll be here for a few months. I’ll add more questions as they come.

Here are more questions:
I know the tap water is not drinkable, do I rinse a 6 month old baby’s dishes , and fruit with filtered water or is tap water ok.?

Also…
I bought Quaker 敏兒HA米精 as baby’s first food because the label said it was for six months old, but I noticed that it smells like vanilla and my husband who can read Chinese said there is no iron mentioned in the ingredients. Does anyone know if it is suitable to be a six months old very first food? And can congee be given instead?
And…
Does anyone know where is cheapest to buy groceries and house hold stuff? I went to Carrefour market and was surprised that a bag of stuff was 2000 nt… More expensive than home. I am guessing the large Carrefour is cheaper ? Maybe Costco if the products are not too big?
And where is a good place to buy an inexpensive high chair?

Thanks in advance… I have a lot more questions to come…

Hi. Where are you living now so we can give more precise pointers regarding stores?

Definitively visit the chains of baby goods stores. They have much better stuff that Quaker -we had several food safety problems in the past, be really conscientious about reading labels and such, and extra super picky about what you buy, better imported, me thinks. If you become “member” of these stores, you get better discounts.

Vitamins are very expensive in Taiwan. Buy on line, like iherb is a life saver. OTOH< the “take your kids for sun baths” school of thought is expired, I am told, we are not supposed to do that anymore. Honestly, I dunno. And it is winter here, the sun is absent for weeks. Same with 6 months start on solids. Allegedly, now they say it is better later. Again, do what you think is right and check how baby reacts. The advantage of Taiwan is that you get all these wonderful fruits and veggies all year long if you want to cook yourself.

Cheap and convenient groceries and daily stuff would be PX Mart. For quality and value, better go to Costco, especially for baby clothes and diapers. But food stuffs I recommend the organic stores, you will be safer.

Tap water is OKish for washing stuff, but definitively, for drinking, only filtered water -most households have a filter on tap. They also sell a special kind of “detergent” to wash produce and fruit, for extra safety, due to probable residue from chemicals and pesticides in them.

There are several options regarding the high chair. The baby stores do carry a wide selection or you can choose from catalogue. You can have yours made at local furniture stores or they will have average -not as many models as baby stores, though. Most buy online. Ask hubby for help with this last option. There is even a foreigner on FB selling hand made baby furniture - cosleepers and other stuff. Check Taiwan sellers group.

Question: Is baby male or female? Clothes here are way too cute. They dress up kids like little bears in this weather.

Thanks for your reply. I am in kiaoshioung. I have a baby boy. It’s good to know I don’t need to wash dishes and fruit with filtered water… And Costco is a good idea, I’ll go next week, my membership ends this month.

I am still trying to find baby stuff, I am just surprised at how expensive things are in tw except for restaurant and street food. I have been trying to find a playpen… Only found one in dream mall today, any suggestions to where I should look? Are there second hand stores? Maybe websites such as kijiji, craigslist?

Fruits better washed in a special kind of soap, as well as vegetables.
