Backseat passengers to be required to buckle up
Taipei, July 31 (CNA) A new law requiring all backseat passengers to wear seatbelts will go into effect Aug. 1, with a grace period lasting until next year before violators are penalized, transport officials said Sunday.
Following an amendment to the Act Governing Punishments for Violations of Road Traffic passed in April, backseat passengers in cars will be required to buckle up, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications officials said.
Traffic officials will start promoting the new measures Aug. 1, although adult violators and child violators will not start being fined until Feb. 1 and Aug. 1, respectively.
Drivers will face a fine of NT$1,500 (US$52) if their backseat passengers are caught not wearing seatbelts on regular roads, with the fines rising to between NT$3,000 and NT$6,000 on expressways and freeways.
Considering how poorly enforced all the other traffic laws are… :s
I’ll be pleased if taxis quit stuffing their belts under the seat.
Let’s hope this law is enforced. I am tired of having to justify to my back passengers the need for them to buckle up - it’s not them that will get squashed when some punk in a tour bus pulls comes around the corner on the wrong side of the road, it will be me - and I will be squashed by them.
I’ve already seen taxis with back seat belts out and functional so at least the sensible among us will have an option even if it is not generally enforced.

Noticed the backseat seat belts being ‘available’ last week when I was taking a car back from the airport, the guy said it was going to be law, I didn’t believe him until reading this.
His comment to me was ‘you dont have to use it’, which I responded ‘why not use it if it is here’, he was puzzled…
