The muzzle looks really smooth though, pretty far down, with no protrusions

“According to police investigations, the gangster who committed the bank robbery took a taxi at the Taipei MRT Zhishan Station at 8.30 am yesterday, but the women’s transport will temporarily arrive at the gas station due to internal emergency while driving to the fourth section of Central North Road in Beitou District. When they went to the toilet, the taxi was stolen by the gangsters. The women’s sports team will report to the police.”

Gotta love Google Translate.

The photo shows a muzzle brake installed on the gun. Looks like a carbine, modified with a short barrel and flash suppressor.

It’s not that hard. 4140 chrommoly steel is not that hard to find in Taiwan, they’re used for making tool/die. Heat treat it properly (again, not that hard to do either) and it will handle 300 win mag pressure easily (that’s about 60,000 psi). In fact it seems in Taiwan making gun barrels is a really big industry here, at least for defense market. Like I said I walked past a factory rolling out crates full of AR15 lowers. No idea if it’s for airsoft guns or genuine military manufacture… but it’s more common than you think. Guns aren’t that hard to make and even the most basic machine shop can produce genuine firearms without much difficulty. If they can make an automatic machine pistol in prison (been done before) it’s not that hard to do in the free world. Just google sten guns or M3 grease guns if you want to be surprised (both are designed to be produced quickly and cheaply in any garage shop).

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s leaked from arms factories here in Taiwan either… it’s not like gangsters don’t know who they can go to for those things. If someone’s bold enough to rob a bank in broad daylight with weapons like that, either gangsters are trying to show who’s boss or we have an idiot here.

You see lots of airsoft guns modified, usually with the pressure dialed sky high, or loaded with gunpowder nail gun blanks. But not anything like an assault rifle. But again, it’s not unheard of and it’s not like the average Taiwanese don’t know how to use them (they all get trained in their service). Someone knows some officer with high enough ranking/guanxi they can pretty much disappear a few T91’s without anyone noticing.

I wonder if he went shopping for gun upgrades :unamused:

Carbine seems long. I’m thinking large machine pistol or small submachine gun.

The news photo looks like some sort of flash suppressor, but we will probably get better photos now they have him.

I’m just leaning more to what is in service around this area, it don’t really make much difference when your at the pointy end.

AR-15 SBR (short barrel rifle) - bottom
AR-15 Pistol - top

Those are ATF definitions. Someone swinging contraband rifle/carbines around aren’t going to care if the ATF call it pistol or SBR.

Shit i forgot the the Taiwan military use the T91CQC carbine

that’s where i would be looking or one of the variants

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were similar modifications for the T91.

Who’s the pro now? Jeez, as stubid as the foreigners who murdered by the Yonghe riverside. Now he will die of corona while reaching for the soap.

Modern trend seems to be for very small, fast projectiles. eg., H&K MP7 is 5.56, no?

I think the idea is small, fast projectile, which would result in smaller ammo volume, meaning soldiers could carry more rounds. At least that’s the rationale for the 5.56 cartridge. 100 rounds of 308 vs 100 rounds of 5.56 is just so much different. 100 rounds of 308 would be fairly heavy (and honestly you wouldn’t want to carry that much) while you can very easily carry more than 200 rounds of 5.56 without being encumbered too much. That and also guns, especially automatic rifles that shoots 308 tend to weight much more, have higher recoil (meaning more training to hit) and you have fewer shots.

Pretty much the idea behind assault rifles is to have lower power cartridge since most battle engagement rarely exceed 300 yards so there’s no point to use something with an effective range of a mile, not to mention most soldiers can’t hit that kind of distance with any accuracy.

I was looking at some H&K, only the MP53 seems to be 5.56, but it doesn’t have the right look really unless it was rebuilt.

Pretty dumb to rob a bank In
Taiwan

Chance of being caught is extremely high
They don’t take that shit lightly

Over here in the USA if nobody is hurt you can get a few tears in jail

Lone wolf, pretty certain he is mentally handicapped in some way. Maybe he wanted to go the big house. Question for you armchair detectives, are getaway vehicles even useful in this surveillance city?
