Why do baseball players all chew gum and spit all the time? This nonsense is not nearly as prevalent in other sports. Is that why baseball is so popular in Taiwan?
Its because the players in the old days were very well aware that they were adult men playing a teenage girl sport, so they adopted the habit of chewing tobacco in order to try to appear more manly. The habit stuck.
Because it’s such a boring game that the intellectually challenged louts need something else to do besides scratching their sacks, planning their next appointments with their “personal physicians”, and patting each other on the arse.
Chewing and spitting’s ok, but I like the crotch grabbing.
I think ball players spit so much because in the South chewing tobacco has always been popular, and in the North one of the most famous franchises was founded by Wrigley, the chewing gum magnate. Believe it or not, many American baseball players actually wrap barely-chewed bubble gum around Red Man loose-leaf chewing tobacco and of course expectorate as needed.
Mother Theresa’s heresy isn’t to be confused with Merkle’s Boner, of course (taking advantage of Merkle’s Boner in 1908 is why the Chicago Cubs haven’t the World Series since). Also, taking advantage of Merkle’s Boner looks surprisingly dissimilar to MT’s shot of the two affectionate Cardinals.
Merkle’s the big bonehead to the right of the guy who looks vaguely constipated and over the crotch of whom is some kind of weird photographic stain in the photo (6th from the left). I think the last guy on the right is inspecting a fresh spit.

Yup, it’s called “rounders”. A girly game played with a tennis ball and a cricket bat during Phys Ed class.
One would also thing all the chewing and spitting would make them thin. They look like a bunch of jelly babies to me.
Rounders with a cricket bat?
Down our way it always looked like a billy club.
Where do the batteries go in that thing? four D cells?

But, how could anyone be expected to hit a perfectly round ball with a round bat? :loco:
