And l thought you were not interested in basketball… WNBA, by most accounts, is far worse than the NBA. Media is obsessed with her, though to be fair, she’s one of a kind.
She’s a photogenic white girl who can play basketball. The media was obsessed with Larry Bird back in the day for the same reason. White men can’t jump.
I’m not much interested in sports beyond baseball and mma, but I attended lots of high school events to support my students. If the crowd is stoked, I’m good to go. And when CC plays, the crowd, home or away, but especially at home, is fired up!
This is so disrespectful to Larry. Larry was as cold as they come. He was the first person in the 50/40/90 club as one of the most difficult with only 9 NBA players to achieve this. It’s comparable to the 40/40 club baseball.
CC is an exciting player and a generational talent in the WNBA. She is the first player I’ve actually cared to watch in the WNBA and many basketball fans feel the same. She’s hitting milestones like being the first to finish top 20 in all major stats categories and did so as a rookie.
I hate to say it but the people making it about race are mostly black people. Most of us just respect the game as basketball fans. Her being the 6th player to record a triple double and doing so as a rookie has nothing to do with her being white.
There’s some really great stories from other players on what he’d do to them trashing talking. He was Jordan like in that way. Nothing you could do about it.
But the idea that he’s popular because he’s a photogenic white person is laughable. Are we talking about the same guy here?
There’s a weird hesitation to recognize her as the face of the wnba. Like leaving her out the Olympic team. The wnba has a gatekeeping issue. A lot of the OGs have said some things that come off that way.
Unfortunately there’s a big hesitation from some black sports media figures in recognizing greatness in athletes of different backgrounds. Most of the times they had to eat their words like they did about Ohtani being a foreign player that don’t speak good enough English.
I honestly feel like many black people in America feels that sports is their one avenue they get recognition in and this makes them feel a certain way when non black Americans come and dominate the sport. But most fans sees sports as something that transcends race, ethnicity, and gender.
The WNBA was predominantly watched by older men that like fundamental basketball.
CC has been changing this bringing in more demographics such as younger women and men.
The reason American sports make so much money is they figured out how to capture the casual fans as an entertainment product. The WNBA has never been able to capture this demographic. No one went to wnba games for family fun for example. They would be smart to make her the face of the league.
Right. I can understand how people in the league might feel about it, on some level, probably not totally without reason. I’m sure as she proves herself it’ll mostly go away. Or maybe the women could be a bit different, I don’t know. She’s not a lesbian either, right? I’ve heard that’s a thing too there.
