BBC vs CNN

[quote]CNN offers news from around the world that …
(A) You can actually listen and, not have to drink buckets of coffee to maintain conscieness.
(B) Every last broadcaster doesn’t just change by name he or, she actually sounds different.

None of which have anything at all to do with news. This is the attitude that has turned solid news reporting into sensationalistic shit like FOX and personality-driven biased coverage like CNN.

LAS VEGAS (AP) A tiger attacked magician Roy Horn of the duo “Siegfried & Roy’” during a Friday night performance at The Mirage hotel-casino, authorities said.
Roy was attacked at the throat, said Clark County Fire spokesman Bob Leinbach. He was taken to University Medical Center; Leinbach did not know his condition.

OK, that is news that need not be sexed up.
But what about the bulk of the news?
BALI, Indonesia (AP) Faced with mounting security fears and economic competition, Southeast Asian leaders at a summit in Indonesia hope to wrestle their loose diplomatic grouping, ASEAN, into a single market with closer defense ties.
The 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations has always prided itself on its flexible, laissez-faire institutional ties. But critics often call it a “talk shop’” with few concrete achievements.

Well, that’s just too dry, right? Maybe throw in a joke or two, eh? Maybe read the report in an affected voice?

The recent self-promotion blitz by CNN on their own staff is disgusting. The message is that you can trust CNN since their people are seasoned professionals. All news agencies have seasoned professionals, but not all of them promote the newsreader over the news.

CNN is also very selective as to what it covers and how. I have been following the Iraq debacle very closely every day and it is flagrant the way that CNN sanitizes its coverage. I also find it pathetic that it is just now starting to “discover” the deceptive practices of the Bush administration when the evidence was out there six months ago. It is a testament to their creative skills to see how they are slowly taking credit for coming to a story tragically late.

CNN also likes to have experts appear for about two questions and then move on to the latest football scores. The BBC, on the other hand, will actually let a guest speak long enough to flesh out his views. I have seen guests on BBC go on for like 10 minutes. This is unheard of at CNN: no one could possibly have anything relevant to say for that long, and if they did, it would probably be off the CNN policy rails.

CNN is a shill for the US; FOX is the Bush administration’s private mouthpiece. BBC is the best if you want the news without the clowns, bells, whistles, and blatant bias.

“Rah el sani’, ija el ussta”
One of the popular sayings repeatedly heard in Baghdad, describing the relations between the US and Saddam’s regime – “Gone is the apprentice, in comes the master.”

The CNN people just talk too much shit. I remember tuningin once to about half an hour of some oil barge burning. Nothing NEW was happening. “The barge is still burning and we don’t know if it’s terrorists or not, and there’s a lot of fire, and you can see a lot of smoke and it seems to be burning now, and it’s still burning. As we said earlier, there’s a lot fo smoke and fire from this fire which is on a barge, now we’ve got someone online who can also see a lot of smoke and fire from this fire on a barge” for 30 minutes.

911 was the same. I was amazed at the difference in quality. On Cnn they were just going on about how awful it was for hours. I was also listening to the BBC and they were coming out with brilliant analysis and pulling in experts to discuss the possibilites of what was happening, and not just blatehring like the CNN guys were doing.

PS I’m also not British.

I’m not that impressed by the BBC’s news output anymore (not comprehensive enough, and some very superficial reporting), but CNN is simply unwatchable. However, the BBC is turning into CNN at an alarming rate, with self-advertising and repetitive schedules. They are also beginning to treat their viewers as if they’re five years old.

When I want news, I want news, and listen to World Service Radio on the net.

Whenever (and it is often!) I hear the national bird of Taiwan, the Jackhammer, I think of CNN’s “Sights and Sounds of Taiwan”.

Have to agree with Hexuan there. The Beeb is going downhill - probably in response to ‘market forces’ and having to appeal to people with the attention spans of stunned goldfish.

I was initally delighted and amazed to be able to watch BBC World in (fairly) provincial China. (Even though you couldn’t access the BBC Online.) But I soon got sick of endless repetitions and trailers for programs that they didn’t always even show. And you can only watch so much Jeremy Clarkson before the appeal fades.

Still, it’s a sight better than any mainstream US news reporting I’ve seen or heard. To be fair, there’s some pretty good stuff on PBS in the states, but guess who they co-produce it with?!?!

Nowadays I get it all online - the BBC, Time Asia (direct to my PDA), and private eye to keep a balanced view of reality. No CNN, MSN, Yahoo or what have you.

I can’t watch the BBC and hence can’t comment but CNN sucks big time, most reasons mentioned already. And ever tried to research some follow ups on earlier reports? Nothing but empty space.

CNN - be the last to know.

How about Sky News ? BBC is public funded so can afford to go into detail.

I subscribed to Private Eye when in the UK and Ireland. They had a great media column exposing the plaigarism and selective reporting that goes on in the UK. ABC’s Media Watch is in a similar vein, and unlike the BBC, ABC offer proper broadband viewing of their output.

That’d be the ABC as in the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Don’t want any confusion.

Actually the thing that I find quite odd is how many Australian presenters there are on CNN. Is it truly international or are we getting a local footprint of some kind?

I really hate to admit that by the way. I can’t stomach CNN and while I agree with Hex and others on the dumbing down of the Beeb, I’d prefer if I could get it. Top pick would be Tim Sebastion’s Hard Talk.

I saw Max at the Brass Monkey has the Australian Broadcasting Corp., running. Yet to ask how he gets it but that might be worth a look. The ABC tends to run the best of BBC and ITV docos and comedy (coz they can’t afford to make their own). The news tends to be a tad too parochial for even this Aussie mind - just seeing John Howard blathering on the screen makes me want to punch it.

Here’s where you can stream stuff from the ABC, including Mediawatch.

Not bad really.

Heard this on CNN, promoting one of their shows:

“When something happens, anywhere in the world, it’s international news to those who live there”.

Hmmm, wouldn’t it be local news to those who live there, and international news (or at least world news) to the rest of us.

Not if you’re the kind of dumb, complacent, mouth-breathing schmuck that bases his or her worldview on what CNN feeds them.
Its a scary, scary thought that probably most people in the world know no more than the soundbites carefully dosed out by CNN. I bet Darkchild and his inability to comprehend real news is by no means in the minority.

Not an American and CNN sucks.

BCC - well, I’ll take it over CNN

Actually, I only watch the news if something is happening that a: could kill me b: could destroy the economy c: could destroy the world d: has half naked to fully women

Bassman, I know of a web site that would interest you, er… I mean I’ve heard of one. I’m sure you can work out the url of a website that contains the style of news you like.

The CNN we get here is the Asia version. I’ve also noticed quite a few Brits on there.

Joesax.

Excuse my naievety, but this suggests its aimed at HK, ie China. I wonder now how watered down it is?

Sandman, also unlike you I don’t watch the news and, judge others by programming that is misleading you all…

I go out and,make it myself…

See if you can work that out and, belch out some more of your Neantherdal hostilities…

Have you noticed that even CNN’s website is going to the dogs, too?

I stopped visiting it a while ago, on a regular basis. But after my last foray, I will visit any other website first.

Why is it going to the dogs?

Kenneth

Unless you are content to be talked down to in simplistic platitudes and fed a distorted worldview of what American conservative politicians and their big-business backers would have you believe, delivered in small and easily digestible bytes by superficial, synthetic mannequins whose wardrobe, make-up, cosmetic surgery and pose take priority over their knowledge, understanding, and reporting skills, why on earth would you want to watch CNN?

Quite honestly, I find Taiwan’s cable TV news programs a lot more informative and watchable than CNN – though the way they portray foreigners does, unfortunately, have a lot in common with CNN’s portrayal of all things non-American.

I’d call that end of chat.

Nicely put.

Careful laddie, you’re beginning to write the same way you talk on air.

I’m not about to support CNN… but I disagree, Omni and HGC, that CNN reports only what “American conservative politicians and their big-business backers” would like us to believe.

CNN sucks because of many of the other reasons cited… and especially because of its self-promotion and endless repetition of mindless analysis…

But c’mon, guys… CNN a mouthpiece for conservative views??? I can’t buy that.
