Be glad to live in Taiwan: gross food from other places

I am ashamed to admit, these are my people. Or at least, the people I grew up among. I have not, and would not, eat this crime against humanity. It doesn’t even sound good.

That, my friends, is a bacon cheeseburger sandwiched between two glazed Krispy Kreme donuts, created especially for the North Carolina State Fair. The donuts are 200 calories, 12 g fat (3 g saturated) and 10 g sugar, EACH. So you’re at 400 calories before you get to the beef, bacon, and cheese. :no-no:

that is pretty gross. krispy kreme donuts went under around these parts last year or the year before. cant stand those puppies.

Calories aside, it looks like it would taste horrible. The combination of sickly sweet with the salty/savory of the bacon burger… eeeeww!

I dunno I thought the same about Bacon and maple syrup. boy was I wrong about that

Actually it’s the lettuce that is wrong in that dish (well, wronger than the dish itself  ). Wrong texture and wrong flavor. Sweet and salty go well together.

And yes, bacon and maple syrup is awesome.

mmmmmmmm Krispy Kremes :lick: with my decidedly American taste buds, those things are like crack to me. The upside is that all other donuts pale in comparison, which saves me from a lot of temptation
That burger does look gross though, and the lettuce and tomato definitely don’t belong (do they really think that the consumer of a bacon donut cheeseburger wants to eat vegetables?). I’d lose the cheese too. Maybe just a donut bacon sandwich would be better. If you just used one donut cut in half, then it wouldn’t be that many more calories than a regular hamburger bun. Do it with a maple-glazed donut to go with the bacon even better…

Gross? maybe, but seriously you Americans are spoiled for choice. Try living in a country that has around 2 to 3 (max) burger variety.

I’d swallow that burger like pills

I came up with an idea of a “Five Kingdom Sandwich”, which incorporates ingredients from the (now out-of-date) five classic kingdoms of life: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protista, and Monera.

Animals: slices of turkey and beef
Plants: tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickles, olives, etc.
Fungi: mushrooms, of course
Protista: only one thing I could think of: Kelp!
Monera: a yogurt sauce, containing Lactobacillus.

No idea if it would be any good. Kind of wondering about the kelp.

Chris, you win. That’s grosser than a bacon cheeseburger on donuts. LOL Though I confess that I’d try a regular cheeseburger with lettuce and unsweetened, unflavored yogurt sauce. I often use plain yogurt where sour cream is called for (can’t stand the stuff) so I suspect that’s not too much of a stretch.

Agreed. If you ever go to Portland, Oregon, track down Voodoo Donut http://www.voodoodoughnut.com/ and have one of their maple bacon bars. They are truly sublime, though I didn’t believe it until I tried it.

And if you imagine you’ve ever had a weird donut, go check out Voodoo. The crazy variety that they offer is probably second to none in the world. 24 hours, cash only, not to be missed!

Well, Chris (and well me I must confess) once drank a half litre of chicken shit water so there’s a long way to go before that boy is grossed out.

:astonished: Eew! Those may have once been my people too, but I have decided to disown them for this and many similar reasons.

Well, we didn’t know it was chicken shit water until after we drank it…

I know but the bar has been set very high. I think I may have surpassed it this summer with all my meals in China made with sewer oil. :lick:

I think I’ve told this story elsewhere, but whatever.
In the late 80’s I was staying with some friends in a big old farm house on the Peninsula in Quebec.
I was leaving, so on Sunday morning I got up and went down to the shop and got stuff to make a bigass breakfast for everyone.
So I whipped up this massive feed, eggs, bacon, and ham, all farm fresh, fried potatoes and toast, with a huge pot of coffee and orange juice.
We were just sitting down, there were like 6 or 8 of us all together (all Frenchies except me, some didn’t even speak English), and just before we dig in, the one girl jumps up and runs to the fridge and comes back with this 2 gallon can (the kind turpentine comes in) with a handle on the top.
It’s (real, obviously) maple syrup.
She smacks it down on the table and I ask her what the syrup is for.
She looks at me like I’m a Zulu with a mirror or something and says “Everything!”
And sure enough, on it went, on everything.
And yeah, it was pretty fuckin glorious.

He he. Yeah. can’t go wrong with maple syrup. A Quebecois friend told me that when he was a kid they would drink an entire glass of maple syrup each day after school before going out to play hockey on the frozen river. Probably downing about 3000 calories but they’d burn it off.

Um, this is awkward… My former boss was a Tar Heel and actually attended the event in question. He returned to California with a singular vision to convert all of his employees into savages. Therefore, I’ve actually consumed a Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburger (w/ all the trimmings pictured here and then some) and it…was…fucking awesome! I know, I know, not possible, right? So maybe my tastebuds are screwed from decades of drugs and booze and reckless nutrition, but I swear to God I put that thing away in under five minutes. It was a brilliant combination of breakfast, lunch and dinner in one bite. The bacon and the doughnut danced like Kelly and Astaire. The grease of the burger in combo w/ the cheese came on the second round of mastication. Mine also had Helleman’s mayo, ketchup, mustard, onions. Not my finest culinary moment but certainly one I would consider repeating, though as Tommy says, KK has been out of business back in my neighborhood.

Yeah but we eat some gross food because some of it is actually grossly good !

I mean come on Taiwans got the gross chodofu and the pretty gross (in concept) pigs blood cake. And both of those are grossly good, even if the latter is apparently anti Christian (eating blood is a no no ).

Taiwanese seem to think their food is particularly exotic or unappetizing to westerners when, in actuality, it’s quite mundane. It deflates them sometimes that chou dofu is little more stinky than some kinds of cheeses and that zhuxiegao is basically a Chinese form of black pudding, something that was very common in my home growing up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding

For many North Americans who think Kraft slices are cheese and wouldn’t go near blood pudding it is exotic enough.
