In the last year I have noticed that whatever I am asking for a business or to a lesser extent a person to help me with something, if it is even the slightest bit out of the ordinary they simply…Don’t reply back
A few cases that I remember
Asked my boss to either add hours or drop a class. Phoned her, originally, than emailed twice. No response.
Asked a professional institute to help me with my foreign certification. Wouldn’t meet me in person , spoke to her on the phone even though I was there at the office, she has ignored my repeated emails since.
Government agency … ignored multiple registered letters I sent. Had to get a higher level involved.
Poor service at a major steak chain. 3 emails of complaint and nothing.
Phone had major issues under warranty. Guy at the manufacturer stopped replying to me and would never again answer my email when I said they didn’t fix it correctly.
A bank. I’ll check with the manager and call back… no call back
Girls being excited to go for lunch and than ghosting… than calling again to reschedule and ghosting again.
If it makes you feel any better, the locals do it to each other all the time too. It’s practically the national pastime. When you discover that you can also avoid anything from petty annoyances to major responsibilities in exactly the same manner, it can be very liberating.
I had a similar experience with a gym wanted to join. They were supposed to phone me to be on to sign contract for promotion price. Didn’t phone me. I went in and complained, askef them to speak to their boss in Singapore and ask if I can still have promotion price as wasn’t my fault.
I realize it’s all about not doing something too complicated and out of the box and also saving face for all involved but no matter how long I live here I still can’t accept that as normal
There’s a strong whiff of ‘can’t be arsedness’ as well. You work your nuts off through the Taiwanese education system, get into a decentish university, spend a small fortune doing a Master’s abroad, and then return to a 30k a month job.
Reception issues were the reasons the gym gave for not calling me. Actually the guy who was supposed to call me got sick and asked the attractive, younger female manager to call. She claimed she did, but maybe I was somewhere with bad reception.
Also, as much as labor conditions and low wages make me upset in Taiwan, the constant “thats too far above my payscale to care ” attitude exhibited by Taiwanese workers makes me think that some don’t really deserve more than bare minimum
It’s exactly that. “I don’t care about your shit company and shit money and I’m going to do the bare minimum as the alternative is another shit company”
