I want to feed my kittens canned food, but all the canned food available in Kaohsiung is in Chinese and Japanese so I have no idea which ones are good or not. I have tried a few already and it seems the pricier ones are the best. Does anyone have a recommendations for these?
Also, I was thinking of doing a raw diet for the cats one day. Does anyone know where I can get a meat grinder?
I’ve fed my cats Science Diet dry food for YEARS (literally, going back…good lord, to 1990) and it has been fantastic! There are other good brands…Eukanuba…and one that is escaping me…
…my cats get wet food as treats, the dry is better for their gums and teeth, but I pick up the more expensive Japanese brands and…ermm…one can simply smelled so delicious that I actually dipped my finger in it, and I can SEE why they like it (then had a moment of "What the HECK were you THINKING?? You just ate CAT FOOD!!! hehehe).
You don’t need a meat grinder for feeding raw. Just chop up chicken wings, necks, etc. into small pieces of the kittens are small, and slowly increase the size of the bits until they’re able to chomp through a whole chicken wing or leg on their own (about eight weeks).
There is more info on another thread - just do a search.
We’ve all had a bite off a MilkBone at some point or another, no?
You want to feed your cat canned food, and you are thinking about the BARF diet? I have the best place for you, here in Kaohsiung… Problem is, I don’t give this kind of information for free… Sorry.
OK, OK, I wil send you a pm with directions a bit later. Pm me if I forget.
We are in the process of introducing the BARF diet to our animals. I’ll be able to report on the results more accurately in a couple months. So far I notice a better appetite,(The appetite thing is because the dogs love it so much, I think) and yet, less stools. The dogs are raving for the stuff. I’m currently raising two young pups who just started eating solids. That’s all they eat, and they strive. Their poops are small and healthy. Like I said, I just started using the BARF diet, and I’m amazed already.
Anyways, this stuff we buy is dirt cheap. I get about 50 pounds of ground beef and chicken for 380NT. 50 pounds!!! The stuff looks like ground beef, but there is a lot of white through it; fat, chicken, and bones. It comes in a huge frozen chunk. It’s much finer than ground beef, actually. Finer than canned food! Somehow they manage to grind bones and meat all together and it almost feels like paste; it’s grounded so thin. You have to order the stuff in advance, BTW.
Not great for the teeth, though, so it’s better to mix the meat with some kibbles, or even better, give the animal raw bones to chew on/eat.
We give BARF patties and chicken wings or backs in equal proportions – total of 800g of food per day, with a day of fasting every week or so.
BARF patties are dead easy to make.
In a food processor, blend:
1 kg of dark leafy greens (usually spinach or sweet potato leaves – NO ONION, NO CABBAGE-TYPE LEAVES, NO LEGUMES)
5 or 6 eggs (the whole things, shells and all)
2 or 3 tablespoons of olive oil
3 teaspoons pro-biotic powder
3 teaspoons of green stuff that looks like dried herbs but isn’t (ask Stray Dog what it is!)
3 teaspoons of kelp powder
7 or 8 cloves of garlic
1/2 kg of offal (hearts, liver, gizzards, whatever)
When its well processed, mix it with 3kg of the ground meat.
Slap daily doses into the polystyrene trays your chicken comes in (our dog gets 400g per day), wrap with clingfilm and freeze.
It might sound like a hassle, but it now takes me only about 20 minutes once a week to do a week’s worth. All measures are approximate, it doesn’t really matter if you use a bit more or a bit less.
The difference in your dog’s coat, teeth, breath, energy level, will be VERY apparent in about a month. The difference in its shite will be apparent in a few days – smaller, drier, harder, less smelly. Because its harder, the dog has to work harder to pinch off a loaf, so its anal glands get naturally expelled, which is a blessing, especially for older animals. Trust me, you DON’T want to have to empty your dog’s anal glands by hand.
Note also that this is for dogs – the recipe for cats is a bit different, mainly because they need far less in the way of vegetable matter.
I just want to know which brand of canned cat food can be recommended. I used to buy some made by Purina, but the pet shops in Hsinchu don’t seem to stock it anymore. I am weary of anything made in Taiwan / China, and it seems most are made in Thailand. Any suggestions? Thanks
