I am a big fan of grey hound racing. Once upon a time I used to own lurchers (grey hound crosses). I am also a big fan of race horses. This was an interesting story. Before you look at the link. Post what you think would be the result.
So one of the fastest grey hounds in the world goes up against one of the best race horses. The race is over 400 meters and held in the UK in good conditions.
I reckon over 200 meters the greyhound will win, however at about 400 meters the horse’s superior stamina would kick in (grey hounds have much less stamina than horses or lurchers, but are very fast of the mark; trust me seeing is believing !).
So if you were a betting man who would you go for ? I reckon the horse would just take it!
You ran lurchers and still bet on the horse? Your lurchers must have been steckys!
My sister’s lurcher cross can cover a half-mile at top speed over rough ground and still have enough left to take down a yearling roebuck. Seen her do it. AND she has a pin in one of her hind legs.
I bet on the dog.
made quick check, looks like the dogs can go 480 meters in about 28 secs at best. horses go 2 furlongs in about 22, occasionally 21 seconds at best. expanded out to 480 meters, that would be say 25 or 26 seconds. looks like the horse takes it.
one thing i didn’t factor in though is, i looked at uk record times for the dogs, if uk dog racing is like the us, they go around a couple of turns, while the horse time would be on straightaway and part of a turn most likely. the dogs seem to lose quite a bit of time on the turns. could easily make the difference in a straight run.

Yeah well I under-estimated the dogs. Rub it in wny don’t you Sandman ha ha.
I knew the dog would win over 200 meters just wasn’t sure about 400 meters. In fact my mother when I asked her to guess who would win she didn’t even hesitate to say the “greyhound no contest”.
Damn I miss my dogs. I don’t keep dogs anymore cause I can’t be sure that I will stay in Taiwan long enough, and I don’t like bringing up dogs in an urban envoronment. I also don’t want to be seperated from a dog ever again. But i miss them, it gives me depression having no animals around:(
BTW Tempo Gain, nice info, can you give some links on those stats as it looks interesting,

Yeah lurchers are fantastic dogs. However greyhounds and lurchers have one weird trait that I have never seen in another “breed” of dog. They have been known to run themselves to death. Literally drop down dead from exhaustion.
I have seen that once unfortunately. It was a good lurcher and it was running on an English summer’s day. Then after running after a hare it just died within minutes. Sad and weird eh!
